The last time “A Whole Better” streamed in a video embed, Brendan Benson was performing it at the Ed Sullivan Theatre for Mr. Letterman. This time the My Old, Familiar Friend earworm gets a proper video that taps just about every visual technique of the ’70s — from kaleidoscopes to split screens, negative creeps to color-saturated ghosts — in service of Benson’s sweetly melodic, riff-centered power-pop that’s heavily indebted to that same decade. Both he and the lady that makes him feel a whole lot better are posterized here and there, but as far as the mug-multiplying mirror imaging, it’s mostly Benson’s face that gets the benefit. Which is OK, because he gives good face.
