With her 1989 album Raw Like Sushi, singer/rapper Neneh Cherry pretty much defined a very particular cosmopolitan gum-snap idea of cool that made a huge impression on nine-year-old me, and it’s hard to imagine, say, M.I.A. existing without the precedent that Cherry set. Cherry’s been on the inactive list for a while, but she recently linked with Scandinavian jazz combo the Thing to record an album of covers called The Cherry Thing. We’ve already posted their version of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream.” And now there’s a video for their cover of Madvillain’s “Accordion,” which features Cherry wailing every one of MF Doom’s free-associative rap lines and showing some serious night-vision crazy eyes. Ted Says directs. Watch it below.
The Cherry Thing is out 6/19 on Smalltown Supersound.
