It’s not just you — SXSW’s attempt to drum up excitement by revealing this initial list really is coming earlier every year. 2009′s list didn’t come until this year started; 2010′s comes before Black Friday even had a chance. It’s like your local mall hanging tinsel after Halloween, except on the internet. It’s like, screw spending money on your families’ holiday gifts and save your money for March based on this 200+ band down-payment on the over 1000 acts that are sure to make the trek to Austin. The economy’s not doing much better than it was in March, unemployment is higher (and among the ranks of the music industry, higher still) — but if this year’s fest was any indication, the free beers and free shows will defy fiscal logic and comport with fun logic. March 17th-21st®, so far starring the likes of Frightened Rabbit, Japandroids, Warpaint, Robyn Hitchcock, Small Black, and all of these dudes as well:

    Fuck yeah! Broadway Calls!

  2. Can’t say there are any bands I’m really excited about, except Fanfarlo, but I’ve already seen them twice this year. (Go see them if you can! They’re fantastic live!)

  4. I’m proud to say there are a lot of great bands in my home state of Wisconsin. That bro from LaCrosse, WI is NOT one of them. Ugh

  8. I always go for the free shows, and as much free beer i can get my hands on, being im not 21 yet hahah, yea sxsw is great, last year i saw dirty projectors twice in one day!, department of eagles, no age, wavves, mika miko, explosions in the sky, beach house and all fo free, i just walk up in it. It was sweet! I suggest riding a bike around town. I hope better bands show up though,

Ugh! No Bang Bang Eche? Not going this year if they aren’t playing. They were by far the best show last year.

Yeah Bang Bang Eche were definately my highlight of this years festival. Lets hope they come back. Crazy Kiwis. Best live show ever. BEST SUMMER EVER

What a shitty list. Amaral? Seriously? Only somebody who likes Shakira would listen to that in Spain. The only good artist I see on the list (and trust me, it was difficult to find one) is Trespassers William.

I’d go see Jookabox. But I can see them in Indy anytime. So you should.

  13. NickS  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2009 0

Frightened Rabbit! Very much looking forward to seeing them in the States!

  14. Jane  |   Posted on Nov 30th, 2009 0

@Zooey: I doubt it. I don’t believe Jack White and Dan Miller are on speaking terms nowadays.

That’s only 1 “crystal” and 3 “wolf” or “wolves” for those of you keeping track.

Last year I ambled into a Those Darlins and The Ettes double bill at a Next Big Nashville day show – one of my faves, and hopefully to be repeated in 2010. Looking forward to Chew Lips, My Tiger My Timing and The Magic Wands (not yet on the official list but confirmed by band), and I’m sure many more that are making a fashionably later entrance into the race.

CAN’T WAIT to see The Boxer Rebellion!!!
