Grimes - "Nightmusic" Video

The first video from Grimes’ breakout album Visions was “Oblivion,” a seriously unforgettable piece of work that stands as, perhaps, 2012′s best music video to date. She’s now followed it up with a new clip for “Nightmusic.” The new video isn’t going to grab your brain quite so hard, but Claire Boucher still has a ton of presence. In this one, director John Londono films her witching her way across a gloomy wasteland. There are a couple of naked people in there, too, so consider this one NSFW. Watch it below.

Visions is out now on 4AD.

  1. Hands down THE wackiest pussy ring commercial i’ve ever seen…i’m buying 20!

  2. Could’ve used a little more of her slowly moving her hands around all weird-like, I think

  3. This doesn’t seem like the most obvious single, but it works.

  4. since when are the woods considered a gloomy wasteland? oh, you city folk.

  5. Still waiting for a Genesis video.

    • You know, that seemed like the logical next one to me too..in fact there are a lot I would have chosen before this one (I actually used it for a youtube video I shot during the SXSW festival where I saw her 3 times). Be A Body seems a lot more accesible for a wider audience, plus it’s got a little bounce to it like Genesis. Symphonia (my wait is u) is the other one I would pick.

      • i would have thought Be a Body as well, especially because she mentioned in an interview from SXSW(?) that she was working on videos for Oblivion and Be a Body.

    • I really want a video for Vowels = Space and Time.

  6. I just realized who she reminds me of: Ladytron. Only Ladytron are better.

Also, you know how you see a weird Bjork video and then you see Bjork talking and you’re like, “wow, she really is kind of weird” (in a good, fun way, of course)? Well Grimes doesn’t do that for me. I feel like she might be trying a bit too hard.

    • Grimes tried to sail a house down the Mississippi river with a bunch of chickens and a sack of potatoes and she’s not “weird” enough for you?

      • Again, that sounds like trying too hard to be weird for no particular reason. Not being weird because that’s who she is, or because it somehow relates to her art.

For the record, I don’t have anything against her and I’ve liked nearly all the music I’ve heard from her. But this video isn’t really doing or saying anything, it’s just casually weird.

Watch a Bjork video and at the end of it you often find yourself smiling, or sad, or in some other way moved.

Even those iamamiwhoami people – their stuff leaves me with a hazy, fuzzy, surreal wtf?! vibe when I’m done watching it.

I think Grimes is TRYING to reach the same places that Bjork and iamamiwhoami are taking people, but she’s just not getting there, because maybe that’s not really her. Like, pussy rings? Really?

Also, as samoven and I both mentioned, the way she carries and/or presents herself in the “real world” makes these other aspects seem even more contrived. It’s a formulated plan of attack, not truth of person, or art.

        • Dude they are ALL formulated plans of attack. Thats every musician, INCLUDING BJORK. She may not be the same kind of wierd as Bjork but she is clearly pretty unique to say the least. For example, I know you dont really look like that weird face you used for your profile picture, its not REALLY who you are.
If all you’re saying is that she’s trying too hard to be weird, then ok. Keep in mind though, Bjork has like two decades worth of “being weird” practice over Grimes.

And for the record…I like your pic. Respek.

          • I totally get what you’re saying. But some people’s formulated plans of attack are weird because those people ARE intrinsically weird. Bjork was weird when she was nine. Other people’s plans of attack are weird because that’s the way they WANT to be perceived. Grimes kind of feels like the later to me. Again, I don’t dislike her and it’s definitely cool that she’s being creative. It’s just not moving me emotionally at this point. Not like her music does, anyway.

Thanks for the respek. Credit where credit is due: it’s a Dave McKean piece.

        • Isn’t “trying to be weird for no particular reason” exactly what being weird IS? Wouldn’t that be a very genuine thing — if you are such and such a way for “no particular reason?”

Maybe you mean that the boat-trip was a calculated posture on her part? But I doubt Grimes thought, if I somehow become an indie-popstar 5 years from now this incident will go a long way to establishing my weirdness just in case people doubt it on internet forums and such.

Anyhow, the art and the artist are two separate entities. I don’t dislike Bjork’s music because she beat up some reporter in front of her child, nor do I doubt Lolita’s “authenticity” because Nabokov was never a child molester himself.

          • Isn’t “trying to be weird for no particular reason” exactly what being weird IS?

For me, no. I think I did a better job of explaining it in a later post, though. It’s the TRYING part that is different. You either are, or you’re not.

    • totally agree RE: trying too hard. her live performances (granted i only saw her at sxsw where she was exhausted… but she would walk off stage apologizing. what??) and interviews make her seem totally unsure what she’s doing. i guess it produces good art now and then. but it’s weird to enjoy her music and then see her talking on youtube like she’s your needy, under-confident friend who checks her iphone a lot. i’ve stopped watching/listening to anything she doesn’t release in a formal fashion

    • hey hey hey…how DARE you, Bjork is weird cuz she’s from Iceland, it’s simple weirdness…Grimes has PUSSY RING weirdness SO…UH!

    • yes ladytron is better, ladytron is a full group though not one wee barely 24 yr old canadian person…ever-so slight difference.

      • Hey, the Ladytron peeps were all pretty young when they started out, too.

        • theres 4 of them…they’re a GROUP haha, again, SLIGHT difference queen of music…

          • Yes, that’s why I included a plural S at the end of peep (although it’s probably peops, truth be told) and used “all” as the adjective.

Regardless, I believe they were younger than Grimes when they started (some of them were, anyway). And who are you calling queen of music? Grimes? Uhhh… no!

          • again, you’re refusing for some reason to concede the simple fact that GROUPS of people with multiple brains, as a general rule, create yummier music than completely solo artists. comparing Grimes with Ladytron is apples and vagina rings.
