It’s hard to know where folks stand re: Dodos. If you recall, the SF band’s third album Time to Die leaked months in advance largely because people were still high on the fumes of the much praised Visiter. After that it felt like excitement chilled a bit… which, if you liked the band’s work previously, is strange. As you’ve heard on “Fables” and the songs the guys took along with them to The Interface, the formula’s still intact. For instance, “Longform” might as well remind you of “Ashley” or “Fools” in its blend of gentle harmonies and insistent percussion. Hop in the car, take your best guy/girl for a ride in the sun-dappled countryside, ponder.

The panning comments I’ve read about this album are bizarre to me too. It’s possibly in my personal top 10 for this year.
Totally agree with artrcker. Loved Time To Die as well as everything else by them.
Love the new album. If you already like the Dodos, how could you not? It won’t convert anyone who has dismissed them in the past, but for fans, this album is great.
The difference is the drumming. Visiter was an album only the Dodos could make — Time to Die is an album that could have come from about 600 bands. In an interview on Sound Opinions a couple of weeks ago, it became clear to me that we have superproducer Phil Ek to blame. He forced Logan Kroeber to play along to a machine, thus killing the most vibrant aspect of the band’s sound.
I was thinking that it was quite strange that they switched producers. I thought the production on their first two, by the Foundry guy, was one of the things that made them so incredibly crunchy and delicious to hear. The click-track thing explains some things.
so many songs on the album are so boring. the middle of the album is a snoozefest, whereas visiter didn’t have any really boring songs.
though there are great great songs, “long form” and “time to die” especially among them.
and how DARE the director of this video cut off the end of this song. probably the best minute on the entire album is the last minute of long form, and it gets inexplicably cut off at the end of this video.
IMHO Beware the Maniacs is their best if you haven’t heard it.
It’s one of my favorite albums from this year, no doubt.
it’s “longform”. not “long form”. idiots.
Hey Dane,
The decision to cut the last part of the song was not the director’s choice.
It’s a little something called a Radio Edit.
SIncerely ~Jenn, the Director of Longform
