Neil Young recently got his old fuzz-stomp band Crazy Horse back together to record Americana, an album that features the band doing stark, intense reading of the sort of American-standard songs that just about everyone in the country know but which tend to have hidden histories that say a whole lot about the country’s history. (“She’ll Be Coming ’Round The Mountain“: Apocalyptic slave spiritual! Also Appalachian union anthem!) The album is out soon, and now Young, under his Bernard Shakey alias, has made a silent-film-style 40-minute short about an author who visits an art gallery. Young taped it at Shepard Fairey’s California gallery, and it features songs from the album and spliced in footage from D.W. Griffith films. Watch it at NPR.
