It would be sweet if everyone quit RHCP.

I thought he died in rehab a few years back. Good to hear he’s doing alright.

  3. In Memory of Radio  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Yeah dad…dickhead…”Bloodshot smile”…that might have been mine first Anthony…by some months…

  4. dontneedanything  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

god i hope so. his solo album from this year, the empyrean, was brilliant and i want more of that.

  5. thekidd  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

The Peppers have been holding him back for years…i mean how can you hang with guys when they play in a band called Chicken Foot…

  6. another “dad” joke eh? i feel like that one comes out everytime there’s news about a band from the 90s. is that stereogum’s way of overtly projecting how hip and “now” they are, or are there a lot of 11 year olds reading this site that really can talk to their dads about the red hot chili peppers? cause my dad hates that shit.

  7. Clear Spot  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Dad is code for old sneakers…It’s not like I hear that dated guitar sound anywhere these days…

  8. Shockadow  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

I love the OLD RHCP & I can see why many of you younger whippersnappers might think they suck. They did make Roller-Coaster of Love, to be fair.
Go back & listen to Nobody Weird Like Me or True Men don’t Kill Coyotes. Then compare that to some of the shite you guys preach about on this site.
Makes you look like the total hipscene douchebags that you try not to be.
    Be nice to your elders.

  9. Ah Yom  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Actually Dad…if you knew anything about shite…you would know that the RHCP did not write Love Rollercoaster, the Ohio Players did. So suck on it old man.

  10. I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic…
I mean, the average person under 25 probably thinks that they wrote that song.

    • And it’s from the Beavis And Butt-Head Do America soundtrack to boot..
And “Soul To Squeeze” = Coneheads’ sole salvation.

Both sans-Frusciante, but two decent RHCP songs from movies I never want to see again.

Thank god kids don’t have to buy movie soundtrack CDs anymore. That’s how most of my allowance ended in the toilet.

    • Ah Yom  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

I’m pretty sure you have your head up his ass…pull it out.

    This is odd, interesting news.

I’ve always confided to friends that I secretly wished the band would ask Anthony to leave. They would then replace him with Josh Klinghoffer, change the band’s name, then become an awesome instrumental combo.

Josh is a super-talented multi-instrumentalist (particularly on drums!) who has played with anyone and everyone over the years. What I’m wondering is, did John willingly leave and – not wanting to ruin his relations with Flea, etc., nor wanting to disrupt the “band business entity” that is RHCP, Inc. – did he say, “Guys, I’m leaving. But our pal & collaborator wants to take my place…”, or something along those lines?

This is a highlight from a 45 minute performance at the Knitting Factory several years ago. It was John & Josh. Making noises, feedback and loops with an old and enormous patch bay synth; layering it with other loops; then playing live over top of it. The whole 45 minute “song” can be found elsewhere online, but these video clips give some insight into what happened. It was much cooler to see live.

Fuck, I wish these two would tour small all ages venues playing experimental music like this.

  12. I was big into RHCP in high school. I feel old right now. That hurt, Stereogum.

  13. By The Way  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

if you’re going to post facts, check them first dude. JF was on Soul to Squeeze, it was written and recorded for BSSM. And good for you, JF was not on Love Rollercoaster, it was Dave Navarro.

  14. anonymoose  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

i don’t care what anybody says- i love old(er) rhcp. but i love john’s solo stuff even more and i’m looking forward to his output. i just hope he stays on the straight so he can have a long fruitful career. it got really scary there a while back :\

  15. Rob S.  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Maybe they can invite Dave Navarro back. That album they did with him was more interesting than anything they’ve recorded in the last fifteen years. Sorry but the folk/psychedelic/funk fusion stuff they’re aiming for now is terrible. It’s all a mediocre, mid-tempo bullshit for wrinkly Gen X’ers who are trying to hold onto their youth by rawking out.

    • Rob S.  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Down vote me all you want. It won’t get rid of your crow’s feet, oldsters. Go back to your Pavement records.

      • Man, i’m 24 and you suck. Have you seen/heard dave navarro’s gay ass lately? Saw some of a show he did on that latest jan’es addiction tour and it was awful. he was all oiled up and doing some phoned-in, soul-less shredding. If you don’t like RHCP’s brand of “psychedelic/funk fusion,” I don’t think there’s any hope for you.

  16. Jayki  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

    Don’t diss the RHCP
If it’s true that he’s leaving, it’s really the end of them as far as I’m concerned
I hope they put out one more alum together but John’s solo stuff is pretty good

  17. If the Chilli Peppers are dead, I won’t miss them. Stadium Arcadium was shit, and it will mean a few less songs to be overplayed on the radio.

  18. Ashrey  |   Posted on Dec 14th, 2009

Say it aint so. I’m hoping this is just a misunderstanding, considering Josh toured with them on their last go-around and can be considered the “fifth” member of RHCP.

  19. hell yea  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

Lots of people should die who made comments. RHCP = the only good band going at the moment. Suck it haters and go wank off to Muse or something.

    • Rob S.  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

I guess that would be a true statement if you’d have been in a coma since ’92. And you must have been if you think Muse is the band people here “wank off” to.

  20. joshymack  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

atleast now they have so many excellent guitar players to choose from… maybe they should slyly steal tom morrello! now that would be interesting!! in all fairness i expecting them to just quite if this happened again but once again the ever changing rotaion of chilis guitar players continues for atleast one more chapter!! what is it like 13 gdifferent guitar players now?

  21. Yes,Mate!  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

RHCP’s Stadium Arcadium was AWFUL. Their early stuff was awful. Personally, on my ipod i just have theur 10 best songs.
Anthony Kiedis drags them down so much i guess.

  22. RobO  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

How can you say that anthony brings them down, your a fuckin idiot if you think that, hes one of the best songwriters and straight up funksters of all time, its a sad day to see frusciante, but hes been being a bitch for a while, maybe now thats hes gone we can get back to some hard core funk/rock,

  23. tttony  |   Posted on Dec 15th, 2009

what do this have to do with chill-wave?

if its true, its about time he quit. his recent solo stuff and the ataxia albums are far more interesting than the shit rhcp has been putting out for the past 10+ years. klinghoffer’s a cool bro though; like his vocals on sphere in the heart of silence.

  24. actually, i’ve always fantasized about hearing the peppers with a different SINGER…one who can do more than just rap-sing:) BE interesting…

  25. Yes,Mate!  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2009

    Yes, Dave-Android!
Anthony’s lyrics are rubbish as well, hump de bump and snow hey oh are terribly written.
he should give it up. :)

  26. Pierre mon Fou  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2009

At a certain point, all bands become crap. Sure, Anthony’s lyrics are crap, but you wanna say that Jack White writes like Joyce? What about some of the garbage verses by Sonic Youth? Nobody seems to think they’re grampas even though they went over the hill a long time ago…..

    • jackstarre  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2009

amen to that. people on this blog are more concerned with cool rather than quality. typical. chilli peppers have some undeniable quality stuff and some undeniable shit. like most artists who break ground with their sound, the shit usually runs out of creative juices (aside from the few lucky ones who keep themselves miserable their entire lives).
a lot of the “best” new music (definitely not all of it) coming out on this site and many other similar sites, ends up being bandwagon production lo-fi mess with a few good songs to get people into it. You go see it live and they completely suck and have no idea how to operate their own gear on a live stage. they just were fortunate enough to come up with a cool production style that all the kids who haven’t heard it a million times before will flip out about.

  27. Enjoy it...  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2009

As a Dad — who can’t believe there’s still a debate as to whether RHCP is relevant anymore — I gotta say that’s a pretty witty Xmas joke. But Stereogum, you DO realize that you’re about 15 days away from being Last Decade’s News….?

  28. R.H.C.P. early shit was shit, new shit is shit, give me Blood, Sex, Sugar, Magic , Californication and One Hot Minute, those are the only albumns worth listening to from R.H.C.P. and anything they might have released for soundtracks.I agree with what some others said about getting Dave Navarro back, he’s brilliant, so are you John, but the albumns you worked on with RHCP are a bit wet.The sort of stuff which you go mad for the first few times you listen to it because of the catchy licks, but after listening to the lyrics for a while one can’t help but yawn….Anthony get your head out your ass and your nose cleaned up, or better yet quit, settle down properly and enjoy your family, time for some new blood! And yes more of John’s solo stuff would be nice, I like the RHCP Jack white idea although somehow I think his voice can be a bit whiny for that psychedelic/funk/fusion sound or whatever you want to call it, you see yes I am a dad, don’t really care about knowing the genre because I know it’s how it sounds is whats important! The comment made by the 24yr old was just so typical, why are 20 – 25 yr olds so far up their own arses all the time, I speak from personal experience and I’m glad I’m not that arsehole I once was, now I’m an even a bigger one!

  29. Lane  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2009

Chili Peppers Rule, every album offers something completely different so I can understand why someone might not like every album, but to just call them shit… whatever that just makes you a moron. Stadium Arcadium is their best album yet, too many always have to reach back for their favorite albums as if the newest ones would make you less informed etc.. I honestly will not be friends w/ someone if they don’t like the chili peppers…

Getting that off my chest…. the peppers have always changed guitarists and made good music regardless so I’m not too worried about that, but I will miss john if he really is leaving…

oh yeah im 22 if that gives any sort of weight to my points…

    • Dave  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2010

Completely agree with you. I’ve been listening and following the RHCP since grammar school and they’re unique syles are unmatched. If John really left, good luck to him and his solo carrier. I know there are other guitarists who could bring something different to the table, i just hope the rest of the members have the desire to start all over again.

  30. Danny  |   Posted on Dec 16th, 2009

Anthony Kiedis has a better voice than Ezra Koenig

  31. i refuse to accept this. IT CAN’T BE. one more tour is all i ask.

  32. Well Hung Ike  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2009

    It’s official.

Read the explanation at John’s website:

    http://johnfrusciante.com/

I think this could be a great thing. John’s musical abilities and interests were seriously confined being in that band any longer.

If Josh is, in fact, John’s replacement, it seems like it’s a genuine, friendly “passing of the baton”, so to speak. Josh has been part of the immediate RHCP circle/family for years now. Not all band personnel changes have to be filled with animosity, negativity or drama.

If one looks hard enough, there are some great MP3s circulating from around 1998 when Flea, John and Josh performed together under an alias band name at Spaceland in Silver Lake; performing an entire set of soulful Joy Division covers. And it’s kinda fucking awesome. This was long before the two-cent Interpol(s) and She Wants Revenge(s) began to fester everywhere.

  33. Yes,Mate!  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2009

    YES!!!
the ‘chili peppers’ shoulda been put down years ago :)

    GENIUS

  35. as a 17 yo who really loves everything the peppers have put out, minus dani california..(pop anthem status is a little low for them) i think the dad joke is a bit condescending.. i’m pretty sure my dad still listens to pink floyd… As for the peppers, they have transformed their music along with their life struggles just like any human would.. i suggest you all read Scar tissue.

If you guys don’t LIKE the style they develop or want a different singer… you know you don’t HAVE to listen to them. buh!

really?? you dont even get anywhere near the same feeling from listening to both songs, a million other songs have outlined chords in a similar fashion…. i’m sure you thought your comment was relevant.

  42. Rick  |   Posted on Dec 17th, 2009

As i just finished reading the 57 comments i am glad i don`t take things to seriously or i would be pissed lol instead i find it funny the ignorance of some these people . I have about 500 cds of which are very diverse , new stuff old stuff who gives a shit if you like a song its a personal thing and i have really liked some of RHCP but not all which is normal , personal taste it`s like assholes everyone has one . Whats funny is that in a few years these young people will be labeled Dads as well i hope they can take what their dishing out when their time comes i just consider myself very fortunate that i love all kinds of music old and new so good luck Kiddies i hope you can cope with aging and then look back and see what idiots you were at one time : )

  43. kamiel  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2009

It would be nice if farmer Ted stops living!

  44. John rules. He is my favorite member of the group, and I respect his decisions.
His solo albums are better anyways, so I’d like to see him continue that.
I just hope he isn’t going through another rough phase that brought him to the same point years ago. He is a unique individual and it would be a shame to lose him again.

  45. dropkick  |   Posted on Dec 18th, 2009

i hope that the red hot chili peppers end and never come back. the world will be better if they aren’t continuing to tarnish the few decent moments they had in the 90s. since then they have become one of the most overrated bands simply because they are compared always to really shitty music and falsely seem great to those that have not heard anything beyond mainstream modern rock.stadium arcadium made me wish for their retirement 4 years ago. john frusciante can do better on his own anyway.

  46. the chili peppers have made some really good songs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvjGrWERM1U

but this is good news. frusciante solo stuff is fantastic and way better then what they’ve done lately. sometimes you have to move on.

  47. Sergio  |   Posted on Dec 19th, 2009

This is totally bullshit! They were talking about getting a new album and now he quits? Shit. That sounds like bullshit. Fucking Frusciante must be on drugs again. Who the fuck is Josh Klinghoffer?

  48. mike  |   Posted on Dec 21st, 2009

are you guys fuckin kiddin me, witout rhcp the music world wouldnt be shit. they are the greatest band ever. hands down.

  49. Puff Diddly  |   Posted on Dec 23rd, 2009

Honestly RHCP is one of the best bands ever, all you stupid ass vagina fafes that say they are washed up, shut the fuck up ok? good, fuck my life why did he have to leave? so fucking gay. The only bands that can compare to Rhcp are Incubus, and Stone Temple Pilots, and Audioslave, pearl jam, and smashing pumpkins. im 16 and i hate my generation for liking this nickelback shit, and whatever the hell else they listen to0. so please pllease, don’t rack on all of our generations musical taste because there’s guys like me, and my friends that dreamed of seeing rhcp live, and now well i dont know what now. Ive gotten to see incubus live and they were amazing, ive also seen metallica, candlebox, silversun pickups, foreigner, and Nine Inch Nails. Just would like to give my mind to you guys whether your a real music person like myself or some dazed and confused shit face thinking about how great nickelback the jonas brothers, and their rap collection is. bye
