The low-blood-pressure sample-based bedroom jams Washed Out poured out this year were grouped with others of their kind under various and competing genre labels, but the critical point was less about what to call it and more about what it recalled: nostalgia for the past (namely the ’80s) and all its trappings. And if that hasn’t yet been made sufficiently, this video directed by Blake Salzman (previously seen aiding Banjo Or Freakout) is directly on point, with VHS print, a tape decks (“Belong” first appeared on the High Times cassette, after all), awesomely ’80s video effects, aerobics, Nintendo, leotards. Watch this or bag your face.
High Times is out.

This is my favorite Washed Out song, and while I like the background visuals, the overall concept is tired and lazy.
14 minutes and 50 seconds on the indie fame clock…and counting…
I like a few Washed Out songs a lot (particularly the remix of Small Black’s “Despicable Dogs”) but one has to admit- after hearing his whole catalog, there’s not much going on there in the ways of variety or originality and it grows tiresome pretty quickly. This video confirms the lack of vision.
80′s nostalgia is like so 5 years ago…
I beg to differ. Washed Out has some solid stuff, especially this song. I’m eager to see what he does with an actual LP.
It is safe to watch videos at work again?
too many “ocean themed” bands. what a bore
that was a pretty half-assed attempt at something, and the intro credits make it worse. and i actually like washed out.
pretty girls, exercise and a great tune…what more can you ask for…This beats about 90% of what is considered “important indie”( thinking about “antlers, animal collective, dirty projectors).
Along with Memory tapes, jj, and neon indian, the best of this year!
the video becomes somewhat addicting. i’m sure its meant to look kitsch. the more i replay it the more i like it. the only thing that bothered me were the purple outlines in the first half. otherwise i love it
washed out is good BUT i want more LEE WEATHER!!
that was fucking awful.
I expect more from stereogum, I am considering going back to pitchfork.
Have you seen pitchfork’s top ten tracks of 2009?
There can NEVER be too much lo-fi indie surf rock. It’s just pretentious to think otherwise.
the sound is muffled and weird. why does it look so 80′s? the music sucks gah
I feel like the nostalgia craze is pretty intense right now (like digging with a plastic spoon in a long-abandoned mine.) Tetris will always be cool, though. So, props on that one.
I like how self-aware and proud they are of their cheekiness that they put the credits before the video.
Horrid.
The song doesn’t match the video. Girls that wore outfits like that didn’t get their sweat on to ‘lo-gaze’ in the 80s.
I cant believe this tired dog shit is coming back. The same generation that slept through 8 years of Bush without even a wimper are now racing off to dust the shit soundtrack of the 80s off. For chrissakes do something original. Oh wait, does this mean we cant have the Tears For Fears reunion tour?
This video is goofy. And I don’t think they were aiming at making gold with it either, so I’m not taking it seriously.
It’s alright but not as good as this one:

Saved By The Bell…”Go For It” by Hot Sundae (Jessie / Kelly / Lisa)
i agree with the so 5 years ago comment …. a better concept would be a close up of my asshole for 4 minutes
it’s like a live action blingee
