It’s already been a pretty excellent year for Phil Elverum (and Phil Elverum fans): Clear Moon, the first of two planned 2012 LPs from his Mount Eerie project, was an absolute stunner. Now, the first bit of music from that second Mount Eerie LP, Ocean Roar, has emerged, and … wow. It’s hard to get a feel for just how much of “Pale Lights” is included in this excerpt, but what’s here is magnificent. It fades in on a roaring swell of ambient black metal (a genre Elverum embraced to breathtaking results on Mount Eerie’s 2009 album Wind’s Poem), which then cedes, momentarily, to near-silence, a distant organ, and a chilling Elverum vocal — which closes with the words, “A small yelp on the wind/And then, more roaring.” On that the storm rolls in again, with greater fury this time, louder, darker. 1. Man this song is great. Two albums and three singles in a year? I don’t know if I can handle this.

  2. Woauh. This is awesome. Keep up the good work, Phil.

  3. why is distorted cymbals not included on any of the albums? that song is one of the best post-microphones tracks imo.
