Deadmau5 Is The Best EDM Artist, Says Deadmau5

Deadmau5 is on the cover of the new issue of Rolling StoneTHINKPIECE — and like a certain huger-than-ever garage group, he used the shine to cut others down. Via Rolling Stone:

David Guetta has two iPods and a mixer and he just plays tracks –- like, ’Here’s one with Akon, check it out!’,” he says. “Even Skrillex [a friend of Zimmerman’s] isn’t doing anything too technical. He has a laptop and a MIDI recorder, and he’s just playing his shit … People are, thank God, smartening up about who does what -– but there’s still button-pushers getting paid half a million. And not to say I’m not a button-pusher. I’m just pushing a lot more buttons.”

More buttons = more sophisticated music. Gotcha.

On Madonna, who recently tweeted “From one mouse to another, I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song “Have You Seen Molly?” written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album” at Deadmau5:

“How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” –- a barely coded reference to Ecstasy. “You want to be ’hip’ and ’cool’ and ’funky grandma?,” says Zimmerman. “Fine. It’s not my place to say you’re irrelevant. If you’re gonna come into my world, at least do it with a little more dignity. I understand she has millions more fans, and is way more successful than I’ll ever be. But it’s like talking about slavery at a fucking blues concert. It’s inappropriate.”

Yeah, he went there. On dance music, in general:

“Just 120 bpm with a fucking kick drum on every quarter note” – but he’s been trying to get Dave Grohl to remix one of his own songs. “Because fuck dance music, you know?”

Sounds like a nice guy. The issue is on stands tomorrow.

  1. He is 100% right though, at least about the first part. I saw david guetta live and he literally was just playing his songs one by one while pumping his fists. It was the laziest shit ever. I feel kids today are going to grow up not knowing what a real dj looks like. Complacent with someone who “just plays records”. Im not the biggest deadmau5 fan but I’m glad someone is standing up for this culture.

  2. I am really starting to regret my deadmau5 tattoo

  3. I’m much more interested in Rachel Maddow’s quiet war on television news.

  4. it’s ok if i pronounce his name ‘deadmau five’ right?

  5. I have no opinions on Deadmau5′s music, or the skills it takes to make his in comparison to David Guetta or Skrillex, however the “But it’s like talking about slavery at a fucking blues concert. It’s inappropriate.” line really got me.

Maybe it was inappropriate for Madonna (MDNA?) to make the Molly comment, comparing an artist making a joke (or more likely trying to relate) to the issues common with EDM crowds. On the other hand, it is in now way comparable to making a joke about the history slavery and torture to a group of people whose ancestors (going by the Deadmau5 assumption) were forced into these lifestyles, and such a comparison is beyond absurd. Did he seriously just relate recreational drug use and slavery?

  6. To be the best EDM artist because you not only need to push more buttons than Skrillex and his ilk but also don cumbersome headwear in the process. Noted.

  7. unfortunately, even though he seems more real than a lot of big names in music, and more likeable in that sense i believe, he still does make the four on the floor club music, so his attacks kind of hypocritical. What I like about Joel is that he has a sense of humour, which is always a good thing

  8. I like that he still rocks the 90′s ball-chain necklace

other than that, this guy seems pretty lame

  9. When did “EDM” start becoming such a popular phrase all of sudden?

  10. He never said “I am the best EDM artist out there” the title of the article is complete bullshit to make him look bad. I agree 100% with Joel, and I am glad he is standing up for the culture. DJs should do real mixing live and not just sit there and push buttons and fist pump.

  11. his music is terrible, but at least now i respect the guy.

  12. All of a sudden I feel like going to Chuck E Cheese…. who’s with me?

  13. I’m not saying I’m not a button pusher but I push the sht out of those buttons. I push em and they stay pushed dammit. Madonna! Slavery!

  14. Hearing deadmau5 bitch about Skrillex and Guetta is like hearing Miley Cyrus bitch about Selena Gomez and Miranda Cosgrove. You can whine about technicality and simplicity and what not, but at the end of the day, you’re the blandest, most commercialized representatives of the genre and you all suck.

  15. Me, too! I love Rachel. Curious to read what this is about.

  16. This post may be a week old, but i felt the urge to post deadmau5′s response to these articles (both this and the rolling stone one)
