Patrick Carney Coachella

The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney recently did a Q&A with Rolling Stone, and naturally, he took some shots at a popular rock band, as he is wont to do whenever he talks to Rolling Stone. Déjà vu! Here’s Carney:

What bands will you be checking out at Lollapalooza?
I love Black Sabbath, but I don’t know if I’d want to watch Black Sabbath without Bill Ward. The band is Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Ozzy. I have no interest in seeing bands with partial lineups. I just saw Van Halen without Michael Anthony. I’m not a very big Van Halen fan but it was such a fucking bummer. Like what the fuck is the point?

Yeah, definitely.
I mean, sure, Eddie Van Halen’s son is a pretty good bass player and he’s a 20-year-old kid and that’s cool, but like, what the fuck is that? That’s fucking retarded. If someone is able to be in a band for 30 years and then people are okay with replacing him with a 17-year-old, they’re obviously motherfucking assholes, right?

He also had some words about the EDM phenomenon currently sweeping through the festival ranks, which is interesting because this particular issue of Rolling Stone has Deadmau5 on the cover. Carney:

A lot of festivals this summer have a lot of dance acts. Do you ever check that stuff out?
No, I don’t understand it. I think when you’re trying to sell a hundred thousand tickets, you have to have a diverse crowd, you know. I think you have to kind of hedge your bets and make sure there’s stuff for people who listen to that music. I don’t know who listens to that kind of music, instrumental versions of LMFAO or whatever.

That’s Carney at Coachella up top. Read the entire interview here.

  1. Somewhere, David Lee Roth just shed a single tear onto a gold spandex jumpsuit.

  2. Because, when I think of Van Halen, the first person who comes to mind is Michael Anthony.

  3. Get over yourself.

  4. The guys in the Black Keys realize they are a mainstream arena act right? Not that there is anything wrong with that but they need to get the fuck off their high horse.

    • I don’t see why you think their label status is in any way relevant to their comments, all of which were true. Black Sabbath is not Black Sabbath without Bill Ward, Van Halen is not Van Halen without Michael Anthony, and EDM sucks. They do realize they are a mainstrem band now, something they reflected on when they were interviewed by Stephen Colbert, but that doesn’t mean their views on music would suddenly change as a result. That is one of the nice things about those rare instances when a band with an indie rock background is embraced by the mainstream. Generally, they just say what’s on their minds, and if it’s about music, they tend to be right. This was the case all over the place in the early to mid-nineties.

    • They need to get the fuck off their high horse because they aren’t a good band, not because they have more fans than Japandroids.

      • Let me clarify: I do not own any Black Keys albums, but I think they are an alright band. That said, even the WORST rock band is better than the best EDM artist.

  5. Really sick of misleading and completely false headlines like this one. He didn’t call Van Halen “Fucking Retarded”. He called the idea of them (or any older band) replacing an original member with a 20 year old “fucking retarded”. Most people don’t click and actually read the context.

    • This is actually a good point, IDK why this was downvoted. My issue was almost more with what he said about EDM. Almost like he insinuated that he was above it or something. It’s cool if he doesn’t like it but I don’t understand where his holier than thou attitude is coming from.

    • Then he went on to say, “they’re obviously motherfucking assholes, right?” Again, the quote is generally referencing people who replace long-time members with young kids. But that’s exactly what Van Halen did. Based on the context, this is not a misleading headline.

For example, I could say people who created aliases to comment on Stereogum but didn’t bother to provide some kind of an avatar are motherfucking assholes. I’m not specifically saying that you’re a motherfucking asshole, but that is exactly how you would interpret it, right? It’s not a leap in logic to infer my intentions, just as it’s not misleading to say Carney called Van Halen motherfucking assholes.

(Btw, I don’t really think commentors without avatars are motherfucking assholes. Michael_ seems like a great guy.)

    • couldnt agree more with airlifted. stereogum is constantly doing this and in greater frequency. if i wanted sensationalist, out of context headlines i’d go over to the NME.

    • Calling things “retarded” is still not good.

      • speaking of high horses…

        • Yeah, because bringing up the fact that it’s blatantly offensive is really snooty, right?

Using “retarded” as a casual replacement for things one doesn’t like is hurtful. Period. I know this is a bit of an aside from the issue at hand, but the fact that ableism still tends to be quite rampant, even among people who are otherwise pretty reasonable on most sensitive issues, is really disconcerting. Can you imagine if this guy had used “gay” as a stand-in for something he thinks is stupid instead of “retarded”? I have a very hard time imagining you telling someone who saw a problem with that situation to get off their high horse (unless, of course, you happen to be a homophobe as well as an ableist).

Long story short – this kind of thing is real for so, so many people. It’s demeaning, it’s hurtful, and I wish more people would start standing up to it.

A bit more on topic: the more I learn about Patrick Carney, the more he sounds like a complete tool. Fuck this guy.

          • “Retard (verb):

to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.”

Let’s just disregard the fact that the word is contextually apt.

          • re·tard·ed
            adjective \ri-ˈtärd-əd\
sometimes offensive : slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development : characterized by mental retardation.

QED. Though if you truly think that Mr. Carney meant “retarded” in the verbal sense, I’m sure the complexities of Latin will escape you as well.

          • man. i should’ve just said, ‘yeah’

  7. Mr. Pat Carney, you’re in a good band. For now.

  8. He really dosen’t know who listens to EDM? Come on now Pat, we both know who listens to EDM.

  10. This guy’s constant assholery would make me feel really conflicted about enjoying his music, if I did actually enjoy it. Luckily, jock jams aren’t my thing.

  11. Can’t wait until Patrick Carney is replaced by Zac Hanson.

  12. Wow. THe Black Keys really pissed off Stereogum for insulting Nickleback. Let it go guys.

  13. The Black Keys originated as a humble, hardworking, blues rock band. They’ve certainly worked hard, continued to put out quality music and toured endlessly. But Carney definitely has an inflated ego at this point. Notice Dan hasn’t chimed on anything like this. I don’t think Patrick would be on anyone’s radar if it weren’t for Dan Auerbach.

    • maybe but i’d bet he’s always been like this and i personally dont mind that he’s so outspoken. i LOVE it when anyone shits on nickelback. whether he would be on anyone’s radar without Auerbach or not really doesn’t matter, cause the guy IS in the black keys. it’s not like he’s a charity case – i’m pretty sure there’s more than a few guitarists out there who would love to have him as their drummer.

      • I guess I’d be more interested if he talked more about what inspired him or he enjoyed that putting down easy targets like Nickelback, 17/20 year old bassists and aging rock bands. The Black Keys are already arena-touring, he’s not far from becoming a target of dislike himself.

I have much more respect for artists who discuss fellow artists they appreciate than persistently covering things they consider to be “retarded” and “pointless” and people who are “assholes.”

Why is it an asshole thing to continue playing music with new band members, anyway?

        • god bless!, and damn straight, its a shame that most musicians are divided by genres and opinions and pointless drama (jack white and dan auerbach feud)

  14. “Most stuff is like fucking stupid, ya know? Like, play in a mediocre two-person fuzzed-out, wannabe-old-blues outfit and our main demographic is 13 year olds that spend their Old Navy paychecks on seeing us at bloated mainstream festivals but like, the way we do it is cool, mostly because, like, I suck at the drums and wear glasses…so I’m like the Meg White of this 15 minutes but I talk too much,”

    -Patrick Carnivalpants

  15. I don’t get why Stereogum gets so bent out of shape. He’s a musician in a successful band, does that mean that he can’t be a music fan anymore, or that he can’t voice his opinion? I agree with him on Black Sabbath and Van Halen. I don’t on ‘electronic’ music. But so what. I still like the Black Keys. And who cares if he’s a dick. I don’t need to have a beer with him if they keep putting out great albums. Anyway, I just don’t get Stereogum’s whole ‘beef’ thing. Again, he’s a music fan, is he disqualified from voicing his opinion just because he’s successful?

  16. Patrick Carney does NOT understand dance music.

  17. He’s right. I’m not that much of a Black Keys fan but someone should comment on the screw job the band is/has been doing on Anthony. I’m a VH fan and saw them on the “Reunion” tour and about 2 months ago. Ed & Alex sound great(especially Ed on this tour) but Roth is a joke. He forgets lyrics, leaves the stage for long periods of time and never does a sound check with the rest of the guys. His “vocals” are really bad. Wolfie is fine for what he does but it’s a far cry from what Michael brought to the stage. Not even close.

  18. There is going to be some overlap with other comments, but I just wanted to do everybody a favor by telling you exactly what you should get out of this article. Patrick Carney, the drummer from The Black keys, does not think “Van Halen is retarded”, but he does think the idea of touring without original members, especially with teenage replacements, is “retarded”. Of course original line-ups are sweet, but sometimes things cannot work out ideally and in this case Seeing Van Halen at this point probably would not be too much of a different experience whether lil’ Van Halen or Anthony is on Bass. Carney probably might be a little bit of an over reactor, might be a little immature, might be a little douchey, but he’s probably an alright guy with some opinions that you might not agree with and he might express in a manner you fine less agreeable sometimes. Also he does not like EDM music and you might like EDM, you don’t have to like or “understand” bluegrass just because I do and I won’t care if you don’t like bluegrass.

  19. Alright, that’s it. I’m sick of these cocky cocks. Before the Black Key’s were just another ‘meh’ arena rock band to me that I was completely indifferent towards. The Nickleback comment actually kind of pissed me off (I never understood why anyone who would consider themselves as respected artists would give two shits about Nickleback, yea duh they suck, who cares.) But this is just too far, now I hate them.

  20. You do realize that this guy was confused for Waldo from the “Hot For Teacher” video all his life…

  21. it’s always the good looking drummer who takes the heat for making snooty comments.

  22. the black keys continue their mission of attacking bands no one likes anymore. next on the list, Hootie and The Blowfish.
