But it’s up to you to guess the track list. In fact, Matador’s making a contest out of it. With real prizes. When news of a “best of” hit in early November, we asked you what should be on it. Right now there’s no telling who was right and/or if the band took any of your suggestions into consideration. What we do know is that the remastered 23-track Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement is out as a mid-priced double LP/CD on 3/9 and that it spans 1989 to 1999. The label notes: “Although the compilation does not include any unreleased material, it definitely digs deeper than the hits.” So definitely nothing new. People who know their Pavement should know at least one of the songs based on the comp’s title. Another tip: The opening song is the one that inspired the title. Start mulling over 2-23 while you read up on the contest details.

We are holding a Guess The Track Listing Contest. The album contains 23 tracks, all previously released, and the first track is “Gold Soundz” (MP3 of remastered version below). Prizes will be awarded as follows:

FIRST PRIZE for the track listing closest to the actual track listing
SECOND PRIZE for the most imaginative track listing
FOUR RUNNERS-UP in either of the above two categories (4 runner-up prizes total)

First prize will be a pair of tickets, with flights and hotel rooms, to see Pavement at Central Park Summerstage on Tuesday, September 21, 2009. Plus a complete set of Pavement Matador 12? vinyl.

Second prize will be having your track listing pressed up in a special limited-edition vinyl double LP for Record Store Day (April 17). You will receive 5 copies of your best of selection. Plus a complete set of Pavement Matador 12? vinyl.

Runner-up prizes will be complete sets of Pavement Matador 12? vinyl.

…A few more clues: 3 pre-Matador tracks are included, plus one song that originally came out on a compilation. Every Matador album is represented, plus Watery, Domestic.

Deadline for entries is 2 weeks from today: TUESDAY, JANUARY 19.

Entry is open to anyone worldwide, with the exception of those listed under the contest rules and restrictions.

In order to participate, you’ll need to head to Matador and click on the appropriate Quarantine The Past album cover. The aforementioned opener:

To recount: Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement is out 3/9 via Matador. At that time, they’re also re-releasing the band’s complete Matador catalog on vinyl. Yes, around the time of these releases Pavement head out on the road for the first time in 75 years. In the spirit of contests (this one with no prizes, hooray), Stereogum’s curious which US festivals Pavement will play. Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lolla, and P4K all seem to fit the below itinerary. I was looking foward to seeing the cover and the title…That was a good enough reason to have such a thing exist….

Oh come on wht is the point? Who the hell buys greatest hits records anyways?

  3. I have no need for this compilation, but I hope “Billie” makes the list for the people who do buy this. The best song lyrically that Malkmus ever wrote.

I always thought it was just “Carrot Rope.” Who knew? My fave Pavement song btw :)

I hope to hell they play Bonnaroo.

  6. Yikes, do you think fans will still be excited by the time this tour gets to Summerstage next September? Inevitable Youtube videos might kill it by then.

  7. Not that I’d ever advise against supporting local record stores, but the Matador pre-order was a stellar bargain.
