There’s probably no album this year that will face more contention than Baroness’s Yellow & Green. (That Lana Del Rey album came out last year, right? No?) The third track to be released from the Savannah, GA quartet’s forthcoming double-LP is also the furthest they have veered from metal to date (including the transitional track “Steel That Sleeps The Eye,” from 2009′s Blue Record, and that song sounded like Fleet Foxes!). The band’s Southern groove and hard-stomping rhythm are here in full, but everything is slowed down, more melodic, less punishing. Check it out at Spin.

    • Nah, I just listen to a lot of metal and used to be editor of this site, so I’ll write about metal for Stereogum now and then. I’m a huge fan of Brandon’s work, though, and I’m glad to see a positive reaction to metal here!

  2. I kind of dig this transition for Baroness. The comments on the Spin page are almost laughable with the Nickelback comparisons. The clean vocals take it a step away from the Red and Blue album, but I’d rather not have a repeat of those albums anyway.

    • I just miss the crushing aspect of this genre of music. I understand growth and whatnot as an artist, but this is the same problem I have with new Mastodon material as well. I didn’t listen to Mastodon because I thought they were really nice guys, I listened to Mastodon for ten foot riffs and cavemen grunting unintelligibly. I was never a huge Baroness fan to begin with so I haven’t been digging their new stuff too much. I listen to other music besides Metal, but when I want to listen to metal, I WANT TO LISTEN TO METAL!

  3. Thanks Michael for balancing the coverage with more heavier music. Noticed that i didnt mention the word metal in this context, because as much as I am a Baroness fan, so far the songs are anything but metal.

    Not to say they’re not good, ive enjoyed March to the sea and this new one as well ( not so much take my bones away), but since the release is supposed to represent one mellow and one heavier, im really looking forward to it.

    • I think it would be almost impossible to classify this album as “metal” based on any existing definition, but I don’t think they’ve moved too far in any one direction from Red or Blue, either (also albums that could possibly be better classified as some form of “hard rock”). The backlash, such as it is, seems misguided to me in that regard. The real question is, have they improved upon what they achieved with those albums?
