Lana Del Rey - "National Anthem" Video

We’ve already seen the extended trailer for Lana Del Rey’s “National Anthem,” which features ASAP Rocky as John F. Kennedy and LDR as some sort of Jackie Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe hybrid. And now we’ve got the full eight-minute video for the transcendently dumb song, which is everything you’d expect. And the video, through good performances and gorgeous Super-8 cinematography and a complete indifference to anything related to governing, actually does an amazingly nice job depicting LDR and Rocky as avatars of glamorous, doomed romanticism. Internet, consider yourself baited. Watch it below.

Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die is out now on Interscope, but I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.

  1. cross between the Quantum Leap and Instagram. Utter nonsense.

  2. Shite.

    Frustrating.

Oh well, I still have Videogames and Blue Jeans on my Summer Playlist.

  3. I do love the idea of the real Jackie O crouching behind a bunch of flowers making maniac faces.

  5. don’t hate on asap rocky. he’s obviously isn’t a joke, he makes more money than all of us.

    • always a good gauge

    • It’s called Worthington’s Law.

Anyone who makes more money than you, is better than you. Therefore, beyond criticism.

      • That’s really weird because it was my initial comment (now downvoted because it wasn’t a cool opinion) that started this.

        See last name.

          • Irony cannot express what I feel about this utter nonsense video, which simultaneously manages to destroy my love for all things vintage and retro and my faith in the music industry….she is totally overrated, I am not saying she can’t sing, I am just saying there is a lot of more interesting and talented artists out there. And you know someone is totally sold-out mainstream when they have a rapper in the videos, which seems to be the norm if you want your video to feature on TV. Go and search for new music, videos on youtube, think for yourself, don’t just consume the playlists on MTV, there is better music out there. Some good music out there by Chromatics, Zola Jesus, PJ Harvey, Trust, Chelsea Wolf, Susanne Sundfor, Cinematic Orchestra, I could go on and on…find your music don’t just eat what you’re fed. You don’t have to like something just because everyone does, and no, it is not cool to wear baseball hats and have gold all over…

  6. I thought it was the other way round. Song was kinda ok, but the video was a pretentious, seen-it-before, mess.

  7. I actually liked it, if only for A$AP Rocky. Now all we need is Mr. Muthafukin Exquire to play Bill Clinton…and my wish list of rappers playing presidents shall be complete.

  8. The music is horrible. Lana can sing, but why sing the yellow pages? This is utter crap.

  9. Will someone please make a gif of Lana’s face starting at 7:08?

  10. Regardless of the nonsense, I’d still vote LDR over Palin if it came down to it #LanaA$AP2020

  11. The internet just keeps making the world weirder and weirder.

  12. My favorite part is when LDR does a stripper squat like she’s bouta suck A$ap’s dick during their dinner party. Classssssssy as fuck

  13. The sheer fact that this video exists and is a real thing scares me.

  14. Looks like an extended trailer for some high budget porn!

  15. I just don’t see the resemblance. JFK’s corn rows were much more presidential.

  16. retro just died….

  17. She’s just annoying at this point.

  18. I think it’s a really cool video, there just needs to be a director’s cut that eliminates all elements involving Lana Del Rey.

  20. All other ridiculous aspects of this video aside, I think we all know what would really happen if someone that thuggish was running for president…

  21. i wish i could be a fly on the wall when LDR and ASAP watch the final cut of this and are proud of it.

  22. just what i needed today, a closeup of lana del rey’s butt being squeezed. thanks. a movie of asap solving the bay of pigs crisis would be great though.

  23. this machine doesn’t kills fascists

  24. Instagram video. But fun and perfect timing for JULY 4

  25. Am I the only one who expected ASAP to start, you know, rapping in this thing? And actually make the song interesting?

  26. Aww, this is so cute. Especially the babies <3
    Kiss kiss.

  27. I’m just glad there wasn’t any kind of ‘back and to the left’ dance sequence at the end.

  28. The video really is beautiful. I really dig the whole JFK/Jackie O in the modern age concept; I thought it was pulled off really well. And how fuckin’ cute are those kids, right?

As for the song, I really liked the early incarnation of it, however the version that made it onto “Born to Die” really accentuates how trite some of the lyrics are.

  29. This whole thing just makes me feel like…

it’s ok to like asap rocky and lana del rey. people still like songs by leo sayer too.

  31. the only thing i ever really pictured for this video was fireworks in the sky during the ‘red, white, blue in the sky…’ part and smiling kids running around playing…i guess it’s close enough, still not sure about the concept, probably over-thought…BUT, i give points for not settling on bland obvious boringness and going for an actual story. the marilyn intro thingy is at least memorable.

  32. i think i liked her better as marilyn then as jackie kennedy, but mostly i only had to see half of her face then.

  33. Lana del Race Traitor

  34. Hater gonna hate. She’s already got 1.7 million views for this video and she’s got a major record deal. You try to do better.

  35. Oh my God. what the hell did i just watch?

  36. What? Jackie and Marylin were the same person?
    That’s just blows my mind

  38. I managed to avoid all LDR songs until today because she seemed overhyped (like ASAP). She must have written this herself, because if a team of producers thought this sounded good…

My favorite part was ASAP’s rap verse.

  39. You should hear my sister sing the National Anthem for the U.S.A.!
