We’ve already seen the extended trailer for Lana Del Rey’s “National Anthem,” which features ASAP Rocky as John F. Kennedy and LDR as some sort of Jackie Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe hybrid. And now we’ve got the full eight-minute video for the transcendently dumb song, which is everything you’d expect. And the video, through good performances and gorgeous Super-8 cinematography and a complete indifference to anything related to governing, actually does an amazingly nice job depicting LDR and Rocky as avatars of glamorous, doomed romanticism. Internet, consider yourself baited. Watch it below.

Irony cannot express what I feel about this utter nonsense video, which simultaneously manages to destroy my love for all things vintage and retro and my faith in the music industry….she is totally overrated, I am not saying she can’t sing, I am just saying there is a lot of more interesting and talented artists out there. And you know someone is totally sold-out mainstream when they have a rapper in the videos, which seems to be the norm if you want your video to feature on TV. Go and search for new music, videos on youtube, think for yourself, don’t just consume the playlists on MTV, there is better music out there. Some good music out there by Chromatics, Zola Jesus, PJ Harvey, Trust, Chelsea Wolf, Susanne Sundfor, Cinematic Orchestra, I could go on and on…find your music don’t just eat what you’re fed. You don’t have to like something just because everyone does, and no, it is not cool to wear baseball hats and have gold all over…

The video really is beautiful. I really dig the whole JFK/Jackie O in the modern age concept; I thought it was pulled off really well. And how fuckin’ cute are those kids, right?
As for the song, I really liked the early incarnation of it, however the version that made it onto “Born to Die” really accentuates how trite some of the lyrics are.

the only thing i ever really pictured for this video was fireworks in the sky during the ‘red, white, blue in the sky…’ part and smiling kids running around playing…i guess it’s close enough, still not sure about the concept, probably over-thought…BUT, i give points for not settling on bland obvious boringness and going for an actual story. the marilyn intro thingy is at least memorable.
i think i liked her better as marilyn then as jackie kennedy, but mostly i only had to see half of her face then.
