iTunes has just added a live version of “Roxanne” recorded by Incubus with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers (!) at this month’s KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas.

While I’m not an Incubus fan, I’m always interested in hearing covers, especially those performed by 2/3 of the Police. Proceeds benefit a 21-year-old KROQ listener named Roxanne, who recently lost both of her parents and is caring for three young siblings.

New Strategy, Old Pentagon Budget
The $259 billion in budget cuts over the next five years announced by the Pentagon may sound like a lot. But they are mainly a scaling back of previously projected spending — the delights of the Washington budget games. This year, Pentagon ...

Don’t you think that’s kind of a poor choice for a situation in which a girl, named Roxanne, all of a sudden needs to make money, but doesn’t have any job skills or anything.
It’s like if a guy named Jesse was really sad about his girlfriend getting killed, and someone decided to cheer him up with a rousing rendition of “Jesse’s Girl.”

  2. you’re funny madskrillz

    damn good point.

wait a minute, brandon from incubus isn’t shirtless and/or holding a drum between his legs while singing a song? poor choice of song and poor choice of a singer too.

  5. madskrillz makes exactly the point I was going to.

Actually I think that Roxanne would be a good cover choice for Incubus. I think Brendan and 2/3′s of the Police and the rest of Incubus could make this cover fairly interesting.

I’m not a huge Incubus fan but I thought that their latest album A Crow Left of Murder was good and I do think that Brendan is very beautiful!

Little Police connection…my sister’s best friend went to art camp with Stewart Copeland’s daughter when there were in Jr.High

Well, it’s a bit of a quandry, because if they sang “Every Little Things She Does”, everybody would say “Why didn’t they sing ‘Roxanne’, it is her name after all.” I don’t want to make assumptions about her emotional state, but I’m guessing she didn’t mind. If Hall and Oates sang “Sara Smile” at a concert to cheer me up, I’d probably cheer up. It’s a gesture.

you’re forget the point madskrills was making, it’s a song about being a prostitute, . they should change the lyrics to – maybe you should turn on the red light. i say horrible pick of a song, they should look at content of the song not just the title.

  9. From what I understand, Incubus have been playing “Roxanne” and “Message In A Bottle” in concert for years. Brandon asked Andy and Stewart to come play w/ them at the KROQ thing … I’m guessing the decision to donate the $ to Roxanne came later? Any KROQ listeners out there who can shed some light?

Well the telephone is ringing…is that my mother on the phone…OH MOTHER!!!!

how did her parents die? was she named after that song? huh????????

she’ll feel a little better if she was reminded about all that nag-nag-nagging…sorry.

wasn’t stew copeland up to something recently? like playing with a couple of other rock vets on some project…drawing a blank…

    very

    …interesting.

  12. Yeah, Stewart was (is?) w/ Oysterhead and Doors 21st Century.

I LOVE the Police, but I admit “Mother” is one of the worst songs of all time. I think Andy wrote it. His other tunes weren’t bad though.

And Stewart wrote “Does Everyone Stare,” great song.

Copeland & Summers are way too good of musicians to be just doing little one of projects like this no matter how good it may be. I miss real bona fide musiians like this.
    And Barb…
Copeland was with the new reformed Doors with Ian Astbury from The Cult on vocals. Surprise, surprise he was kicked out for “irreconcilible differences”. Sound familiar?

whoa… you are all a bit cold today…

while I can totally understand where you are coming from I also do not think that a 21y.o. who lost her parents and has to take care of 3 younger siblings and who?s name is Roxanne like the police song “Roxanne” which happens to be about the idea of a prostitute finding some sort of peace (and I am sure that this woman can use some sort of peace in her life right now) — I just don?t think she minds?

this is not a song about a prostitute in a Pimp/Ho sort of way? it is a beautiful song about the hardship that some lead both fugitively and/or literally?

look at the big picture? and just for those who are not up on their Police lyrics

    ======

Roxanne, you don?t have to put on the red light
    Those days are over
You don?t have to sell your body to the night
Roxanne, you don?t have to wear that dress tonight
    Walk the streets for money
You don?t care if it?s wrong or if it?s right

Roxanne, you don?t have to put on the red light
Roxanne, you don?t have to put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light
Put on the red light, oh

I loved you since I knew ya
I wouldn?t talk down to ya
I have to tell you just how I feel
I won?t share you with another boy
I know my mind is made up
So put away your make up
Told you once I won?t tell you again it?s a bad way

Roxanne, you don?t have to put on the red light
Roxanne, you don?t have to put on the red light
You don?t have to put on the red light
Put on the red light, put on the red light

    ======

I am very cool with this and impressed by those involved… kudos

  15. checked out the tune and although I’m not into Incubus homie didn’t sound too bad…

  16. also be sure to search for the Strontium 90 version of “Every Little Thing (She Does Is Magic)”… ill stuff…

  17. “Roxanne’s Home for the Holidays” is a project put on by SoCal drivetime jocks Kevin & Bea. More info about KROQ listener Roxanne’s plight here:
    http://kroq.com/kevinandbean/kb.html
(Click on “Roxanne’s Home for the Holidays”).

This version isn’t that great, I admit, but the kindness behind its offering is what motivates the masses to pay for it.
