This is a decidedly different look for Dawn Landes, the country-folk artist that first popped up here with her bluegrass cover of “Young Folks.” There she was apple-cheeked and winsome; “Young Girl” showcases a glittery-cheeked, gritty, and glam side to the 28-year-old’s stylings, out of step with most everything else on her third LP Sweet Heart Rodeo (Byrds reference unintentional). It’s a slow burning cautionary tale sung to a young girl “everyone wants to get inside” by one who knows better, Landes playing both the prowling young girl and the one doing the warning. The clip was shot in the Lower East Side and directed by Jon Watts, whose treatment isn’t so far from the dingy haze he supplied to TV On The Radio’s “Wolf Like Me.” Check it:
Sweet Heart Rodeo is out 1/19 via Cooking Vinyl.
