Washed Out – “Straight Back” (Fleetwood Mac Cover) (Stereogum Premiere)

The indie rock tribute album to Fleetwood Mac, Just Tell Me You Want Me, got considerably more timely with last week’s announcement that the Mac would be reuniting for a tour. So this is a good time to celebrate the band’s evergreen catalog, which we’ve been doing a lot lately, with posts on Best Coast x “Rhiannon” (better than Cosentino’s non-comp take on “Storms”), New Pornographers’ reverent and great take on “Think About Me,” Lee Ranaldo Band with J Mascis on “Albatross,” The Kills on “Dreams,” and covers by Lykke Li, MGMT, and Antony. It’s been a veritable landslide.

Today’s look comes from Washed Out, who sources “Straight Back,” the Nicks-fronted cut from 1982’s soft rocking, Tusk followup Mirage. In its original instance, the song has a smooth luster and dreamy mid-tempo dance pulse, which is to say it is apropos putty in Washed Out’s hands, who ratchets up the dance and gives it all a beachfront Balearic shimmer. The show-closing, “Oh”-facing Buckingham guitar solo is translated here into slippery slide-guitar-isms, which is a nice look for Washed Out. If Fleetwood Mac vacationed in Ibiza:
