In past years at the Pitchfork Music Festival, it hasn’t been unusual to see celebrities wandering around the VIP area, but those celebrities are usually people like Julia Stiles or the GZA, not cover-of-US-weekly material. But when the frighteningly gifted space-rap hope Kendrick Lamar played the third stage yesterday, Lady Gaga reportedly turned up to watch. This is nuts, and it says a lot about Kendrick’s incipient-star status. Kendrick’s new single “Swimming Pools (Drank),” which debuted over the weekend, is a pretty good indication of why Kendrick’s star is rising like that. It’s a woozy but dense bit of indie-rap verbiage that somehow, against odds, works as pop. Listen to it below.
