Australia’s Triple J has a good thing going with the segment it’s dubbed Like A Version, semi-regularly coaxing artists to record an exclusive cover for broadcast. One day less than a year ago, we posted up the session in which Bon Iver covered Feist’s “The Park.” Today it’s Grizzly Bear, who’ve been on tour down under, stopping into the station armed with a take on Hot Chip’s The Warning breakout “Boy From School.” Rossen stamps the tune with his signature acoustic chord voicings ala JoJo, Ed offers his spin on Alexis Taylor’s vulnerable vocal. No beats — none necessary.

Listen to the Grizzly guys play some originals and rap about touring, Aussie beaches, and “Sex On Fire” over at Triple J.

i know it’s friday and it doesn’t take much, but this really made my day. the original is one of the best songs of the last decade, and the grizz’s cover definitely does it justice.

  2. great cover!

  3. Two Great Bands, Two great songs, keep em coming guys

  4. Beautiful, beautiful cover. Well done as always, Grizzly Bear.

    Excellent cover!

Amazing and heart-breaking. Gives the song a new vulnerability. Absolutely in love with it

  7. Grizzled Bears sure know how to suck all the energy out of everything they touch. And what’s up with the dude over-pronouncing all the lyrics, particularly “trieeed.” This isn’t 17th century England.

Hey i’m Joe and I’m cranky and annoyed that a band I don’t like covered a song in Australia that people seem to like and blog about. Why doesn’t everyone agree with me? Wahhh, so I’m going to bitch and moan about it. Anyone wanna hang out tonight?

      • Hi I'm Hey I'm Joe   |   Posted on Jan 22nd, 2010

Hi I’m “hey I’m joe” and I take slights against my favorite bands personally as if they were slights against me. I’ve so intertwined my identity with soporific, moody-blues-inspired indie rock that if someone suggests the Grizzled Bears over-pronounce lyrics, I feel like they are deprecating MY worth as a human being and will, consequently, get all worked up about it. I AM A GRIZZLED BEARS! RAWR.

  8. I love the original song and I love the cover. Any day with a new Grizzly Bear song is a great day. Super excited.

  9. Well done. When I saw “Grizzly Bear Cover Hot Chip,” I’ll admit my initial thought was, “This cannot be good.” But then I heard which song it was and heard the execution of said cover and was very pleasantly surprised.

Hi, im also Joe. I dont have much to say about the other two Joes, but I reckon grizzly bear are great and i saw them play two shows in australia last week. The reason for posting is more to do with the fact that the radio station Triple J are an amazing asset, for a publicly funded station to be so awesome is great! the Phoenix like a version that was recorded a month or two is also great. also, el mariachi del bronx. the list goes on. Keep on being awesome triple j.

This doesn’t cease to amaze me. After seeing their show at Sydney recital hall, I was a convert for sure. Also heard from others that Triple J recorded their last Recital hall show as well. Best American Band I’ve seen live which easily topped Animal Collective and Yeah Yeah Yeahs this season. Festivals just don’t do them justice. Go see one of their real shows.
