Vybz Kartel

Dancehall don Vybz Kartel returns next month with a full length via Vice and Mixpak titled Kingston Story. Between the album name and literally everything about “My Crew,” let’s assume Vybz is on a self-chronicling autobiographical “we run this in Jamaica” kick; the track’s producer Dre Skull says Vybz commissioned a track for his crew to bang to while hanging in the Kingston club Vybz owns (called The Building) that’s papered with huge pictures of him everywhere (while serving Street Vybz rum, which has a bottle featuring a huge picture of him also). “It was an understatement to say he was running things,” says Dre of his visit to The Building. And so the bone-rattling gun-fire slow-jam beat Skull crafted is the right one for that scene, and Vybz in turn stunts on in commanding and booming fashion, memorializing his club life on a song that’s custom fit for it.
