Last we heard from indie rock’s most enchanting woodland creature, she was performing for douchebags and Björk in Chelsea. Fortunately the crowd was better behaved for a one-off gig at Somerset House in London last night, and Joanna rewarded them with a new song. According to the fan who uploaded this phone footage, before the song she joked that “it’s not like people can put recordings of this song and place them in some sort of metaphysical forum for other people to see and comment on.” It’s a pretty piano waltz and while the visual couldn’t be worse, it’s worth a listen.

Pic from BAM 2/1/08. You can hear another unreleased song, from a concert in Brazil last fall, here.

Joanna Newsom comes to “Portlandia”

  1. What does it sound like?  |   Posted on Jul 21st, 2008

    It sounds like Tori Amos.

  2. I don’t think I’m ever going to “get” Joanna Newsom.

  3. Definitely and old soul songbird character about her. I liked the tempo change at the end of the song; but then again, I’ve always preferred a quick waltz.

  4. Piano is hard on my ears. I don’t like the piano tune on milk eyed mender. Otherwise, I think Joanna has unreal talent. MIlk Eyed Mender kinda blew my mind…I thought she was the first thing I’d heard that made me think of talent in the same class as Tom Waits. Milk Eyed Mender is just amazing. But I don’t like the piano on that either…it’s a clomping style that is ..well…annoying. Her harp playing is brilliant…Her melodies are brilliant, and her songs are outta sight.
    But that damn piano….

  5. Baby Birch! cool to hear it in an older form.
