Ascendant indie guitar dudes Surfer Blood maybe be off and running on a massive tour supporting their ace debut Astro Coast (tour dates at the bottom of this post), but clearly they’ll always carry their Florida home with them. At least judging from this Chunwoo Kae & Kevin Chapados-directed clip, in which they lovingly mashup their state’s greatest cultural export (Disney characters) and greatest cultural import (old people) in the scene captured above. There’s also street-running in tighty whities. The drippy fixture dangling overhead in the final scene where singer John Paul Pitts crowd surfs (“Swim,” you get it) suggests it was shot in the Cameo Lounge on N. 6th in Williamsburg, where the band played a New Year’s show with special cameo guest Marnie Stern. Watch the “Swim” video and their jam with Marnie here:

Here’s Surfer Stern ringing in 2010:

A side-note on the Cameo Lounge: There’s a great, free comedy show there every Wednesday night hosted by Gummys Live-alum Max Silvestri, Gabe Liedman, and (occasionally) Jenny Slate, featuring a consistently excellent lineup of rising and established comics (past bills have featured Sarah Silverman, Todd Barry, Aziz Ansari, John Mulaney, Joe Mande, Videogum’s Gabe Delahaye, Kumail Nanjiani aka John Mayer’s BFF, and many et ceteras). It’s called Big Terrific, and it’s the best way to spend no money in Brooklyn.

Astro Coast is out via Kanine. Check the tour dates:

Not sure I love this album yet, but they’re playing right around the corner from my apartment, so I’ll give them a shot live. Singer’s voice just sounds kind of difficult to connect with right away, if that makes any sense.

fun video for a fun song.
and speaking of Small Black – has anyone else recently noticed that there are many places referring to them as a Long Island band/duo (because that’s where they’re from and that’s where the last crappy bands they were in were based) and they’re trying so hard to affiliate themselves with Brooklyn now? Don’t get me wrong, LI’s music scene is lame (mostly cookie cutter emo tools…sorry) but it’s interesting that even Pitchfork refers to them as a Long Island duo and a few of Small Black’s tour band members are actually P4k contributors…
They say in one interview i stumbled across- “Small Black is in fact NOT a Long Island duo! We haven?t lived there for years and years, and although our families still live there and we did record the album out there, we are Brooklyn boys for sure.” Woah take it easy, dude…you sound like a tool…

  3. Wow, they’re playing in SF and Portland at the same time… they truly are amazing!

  4. reverbilicious.

  5. really? song’s fine I guess. But I didn’t read these comments until after watching the video. And after the first 3 seconds, I was bracing myself for commentors to shred it apart because….. it’s a bad video. but, apparently, we’re in the part of the Surfer Blood story where they can do no wrong. So I’ll come back in 2 months when everyone changes their minds.

  7. terrible live…

  8. Agreed, they aren’t good live. And please drop the overly reverbed vocals crutch…

Next video shot in either McCarren or McGorlick parks will cause me to kill myself.

“Comon guys, we need to show the indie rock community that we live in Williamsburg before we can’t afford the rent anymore! Forget that our music isn’t that great, people already think we’re cooler than they did 6 months ago, I can feel it! Now let’s walk to the park and shoot this video…”
      - 8 out of 10 “musicians” living in my neighborhood today

      • yeah, this was def shot in the east village. next time you decide to talk shit about a video, how about you display some of your own amazing work.

        • As that how critics, journalists, this blog, etc works? For one to talk about a video or movie or song or football game, you have to show the video or movie or song or football game you’ve done first? Hey Amrit, can you please post the music and music videos you’ve created?
I think the point this person was getting at is that this band is from Florida…funny how bands feel the need to associate themselves with downtown NY or Brooklyn…

They’re on a brooklyn record label…and the concept of video has no intention of associating them with NY. I’m sure if they could afford to fly everyone out to florida, they would. In fact. it was shot on new years, and jan 2nd and 3rd in the bitter cold. I highly doubt they (the directors or band) wanted to do this in NY.

It’s safe to say 90% of record labels worth mentioning are in NY…what does that have to do with why the band was in NY to film it? And what does a Brooklyn label have to do with filming a video in LES?

    • Charles  |   Posted on Jan 29th, 2010

This was shot in Tompkins Square park, not brooklyn.

I saw a picture of these kids the other day, and one of them seriously looks like he’s 15 at the oldest. Oh, my wasted youth.

I’m still not feeling this band, but I’m looking forward to learning about other bands from West Palm Beach. I hear a strong music scene is a-brewin’ down there.

    • Really?? Where did you hear that?

My mind is still blown by just one band from WPB being so highly lauded. Maybe I’m biased though since I went to the high school nearby and just associate the area with an onslaught of bad emo/hardcore bands and few visits from touring bands.

I’m just having difficulty imagining as fertile ground for good music, yet alone good music that anyone further north than Orlando cares about. Okay. I’m definitely prejudiced against the region.

  19. Actually, there’s at least one great band in WPB that you haven’t heard of. I wrote an article about them for New Times that appears on my blog here: http://www.boneinthefan.com/west-palm-beachs-lavola-the-best-band-you-dont-know.html

They work hard, give a shit about their craft, and make real music. Footage of a hood-rat show interrupted by law enforcement:
