Big Boi & Little Dragon - "Mama Told Me"

OutKast rapper Big Boi is getting ready to unleash Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, the follow-up to his great 2010 solo album Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty. His early track “Gossip” features UGK and Big K.R.I.T., but another song from the album, “Mama Told Me,” has a very different collaborator: The Swedish pop group Little Dragon. The two team up on a track called “Mama Told Me,” which finds Little Dragon doing a remarkably sharp take on the ’80s funk cheese that Big Boi so loves. And at Little Dragon’s recent Uncapped show in Austin, Big Boi showed up to debut the song with them. Watch the performance below.

Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors is due 11/13 on Def Jam.

  1. Such a dreamy pairing I can hardly believe it! Excellente, I say.

  2. This is dramatically superior to 99.78% of the awkward indie pop/southern rap collaborations that have been immaculately conceived in the last year or so, even if just because it’s an actual song and not just some lazy rapping atop an overproduced synth track.

Plus, Little Dragon were already making music that would fit pretty comfortably under the Dungeon Family umbrella. For as much as people talk about hip-hop becoming a more expansive, experimental genre, I think more of the credit goes to alternative/college/indie rock gravitating heavily towards the sounds and rhythms of rap. It’s crazy how, in just under 10 years, the sound of traditional guitar rock has become antiquated to the point of evoking nostalgia when it does show up. I mean hell, Questlove, a DRUMMER for a RAP GROUP, is probably the most well-known, revered instrumentalist in modern music, which is awesome and mind blowing for so many reasons.
