Destroyer - "Face Like Summer"

When I was an intern at Rolling Stone in the late ’90s, I told an editor there that I was “really into the Welsh psychedelic indie rock scene.” He laughed at me, and rightly so. At the front of that scene, alongside Super Furry Animals, was Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci. Good times. Anyway, Destroyer covered Gorky’s “Face Like Summer” for AVC’s Undercover Summer Break, at Milwaukee’s Turner Hall. It’s a robust rendition, with a gentle horn section and Dan Bejar’s wan, nasal (wonderful) voice filling the big stage. Check it out.

  1. in a battle for what artist has the most contempt for his fans and his music, who wins between Dan Bejar & Stephin Merritt?

  2. GORKY’S! a bad so obscure that most Welshmen don’t even know them.

    • it’s pretty sure you don’t know them, but sparkling as you are, you probably have some visual and hearing impairments.

  3. Great anecdote about Rolling Stone editors. One of the many reasons why their music coverage has become as necessary as a land-line in the 21st century.

The Super Furry Animals catalogue holds up very well. Easily as vital as any of their UK contemporaries (Blur, Radiohead, etc.). Monster live act as well.

  4. Heineken? Fuck that shit.
