Over the weekend, thousands of fans flocked to this year’s Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park. Overcast and chilly weather was offset by the fire from the Metallica pyrotechnics and warm vibes from festival attendees. Neil Young & Crazy Horse turned up their guitars to close out Friday, Metallica blew everyone away with their hellfire on Saturday, and Stevie Wonder dazzled with his barrage of hits to on Sunday. Some of the other highlights included Jack White’s impromptu set in the midst of the trees, a stellar performance by the reunited Grandaddy, massively gigantic crowds for Of Monsters And Men, Alabama Shakes, and Passion Pit, and impressive showings by the UK contingent of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. 1. Really great fest despite the oppressive dampness of Golden Gate Park at night…

Some (unexpected) highlight performances included Reggie Watts, Antibalas, Thee Oh Sees. I opted for Metallica, which was more than worth it, but there was a strong consensus among everyone I’ve talked with that Sigur Ros, who closed out that same night on the second stage, had the best set of the weekend.

Also of note: Skrillex was not very loud. After reading all the hype about his live performance here and elsewhere I thought I’d give it a shot, but was generally disappointed. C’est la vie.
