We passed along details about M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel’s sophomore album Volume 2 many moons ago, but now we can offer the album art, a tracklist (eleven originals plus NRBQ and Skeeter Davis covers), a listen to first single “In The Sun” (featuring Tilly & The Wall on guest vocals), and news about Deschanel’s upcoming role as ’60s groupie/Frank Zappa nanny Pamela Des Barres. Might as well get started with the sounds.

“In The Sun”

The tracklist:

01 “Thieves
02 “In The Sun” (Feat. Tilly and the Wall)
03 “Don’t Look Back”
04 “Ridin’ In My Car” (NRBQ cover)
05 “Lingering Still”
06 “Me And You”
07 “Gonna Get Along Without You Now” (Skeeter Davis cover)
08 “Home”
09 “I’m Gonna Make It Better”
10 “Sing”
11 “Over It Over Again”
12 “Brand New Shoes”
13 “If You Can’t Sleep”

Volume Two is out 3/23 via Merge. You’ll be able to get “In The Sun” on a 7″ single b/w Phil Spector/The Ronettes’ “I Can Hear Music.” The duo will be touring this Spring:

03/15 Los Angeles, CA @ Largo?
03/25 Los Angeles, CA @ El Rey Theater
?03/27 Savannah, GA @ Savannah Music Festival
03/29 New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom

04/15 Pomona, CA @ The Glass House
?04/16 Indio, CA @ Coachella Festival

As far as Deschanel’s extracurricular activities, she’s agreed to star in a half-hour HBO pilot based on ’60s icon Pamela Des Barres’ I’m With the Band: Confessions Of A Groupie, a topic you might recognize in more general form via the “Band-Aides” in a past Deschanel flick, Almost Famous. Deadline Hollywood notes:

Deschanel will be executive producer with her longtime manager Sarah Jackson of Seven Summits, and Tim Gibbons, an executive producer of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Des Barres bragged about her bedroom experiences with the likes of Mick Jagger, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and actor Don Johnson. But along the with excitement of rolling with famous rockers, there was also the emptiness and heartbreak of being demeaned and discarded by stars once the next pretty young thing came along … Zooey’s series is supposed to be a dramedy.

But who plays Don Johnson?

  1. I like the song. It keeps with the same sound as the first album. As for her as Des Barres, I think Jenny Lewis would be better for the role just because she looks more like her when she was younger.

The BEST things around are on HBO…They’re almost our only hope…Still feel the void of the Sopranos is felt….

showtime has made HBO look silly. You must be from the past. HBO was good, um, 8yrs ago. Dexter, Weeds etc are much better than anything HBO is doing these days. In fact, I would say HBO lost it’s shit when they killed Mr. Show.

It’s like I’ve been ego riffing with you since I walked through the door…

the real question is….does she get naked in it…..

    • bebacker  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2010 0

The real question is if you will show us your teeny dick on your webcam, bitch. Stop judging women by their looks.

Also, m. ward writes the same fucking song over and over. Boring.

At least Beck wrote 1 amazing song for his actress.

And, for reals, this whole thing with boring actors paring themselves with indie/corporate songwriters just shows that we have now entered 1992 for indie rock. It is over folks.

you didn’t seem to mind while i was ramming your ass.
and i’m not exclusive…i’ll judge men, women, children, sheep, monkeys…
i didn’t judge you and your gapping asshole…almost got lost in there…but i still took one for the team.

really? i though her naked scene in 500 days of summer was creepy. she’s gorgeous but the thought of her naked creeps me out for some reason…

      • hubba  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2010 0

agreed. her character was a bit creepy, great, but creepy.
i guess it’s the idea of her playing a sex/groupie addict that will be the big payoff…

      • Naked Zooey Scene  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2010 0

What do you mean? I watched that last night and she never got naked. Did I miss the scene? WTF?

  4. Blu  |   Posted on Feb 3rd, 2010 0

It’s good… not as catchy as Why Do You Make Me Stay Here, but I don’t think they’ll ever top that one.
Hasn’t Mrs. Gibbard gained a bit of weight since we saw her last?

jesus, this HBO show is just one more on screen appearance for zooey to sing. i mean, i love her, but i’m starting to think she has something written in her contract that says she has to sing in every role she gets. it’s weird. we get it, zooey. you can (kinda) act AND you can sing!

but you’re still cute as hell.

  6. ben  |   Posted on Feb 3rd, 2010 0

Not only do I share your name but also your point of view Ben. It’s getting really annoying.

  7. ceasA  |   Posted on Feb 3rd, 2010 0

I am hopelessly devoted to Zooey.

  8. The lyric “it’s ok” is the perfect way to describe this song. I can’t wait to hear the rest, though.

  9. Richard  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2010 0

    She can’t sing worth shit.

  10. Nikolaj  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2010 0

Don Johnson should play Don Johnson.

  11. This shit is so boring. What are you even supposed to do while listening to this? Drive around in a car on a sunny day? Buy jeans? Aren’t there enough Belle & Sebastian records to buy clothes to?

  12. lovely song!

the record seems as if its going to be quirky and sunny just as the previous one, but with a sad twist. I’m guessing “Thieves” is “Thieves Among Us”, a song that they have sang for a couple years now. Its great.

As for Zooey’s series, since its HBO, and based on a book written by some slut, I’m guessing there’s going to be some kind of nudity going on. It’s all up to Zooey to put her spin on it. This also means she’ll go toe to toe with her ex again, Jason Schwartzmann, who has his own series on HBO. A great and funny series. Should be interesting.
