When we gave you our thoughts on Transference, “Written In Reverse” was described as “a bona fide rocker with Daniel’s busy throat-shredding falsetto, splashy drums, and piano noise brushed beneath the big guitars.” When the band brought the song to Conan (RIP), some of you thought Britt’s voice was a bit too shredded. The Danny Clinch-shot video for the track finds the group running through another performance of the song, this time in black and white beside a view-reversing mirror. It’s set to a studio new cleaned-up live version of the song. The guys are also more animated than last time through, as that above Britt-as-Hendrix thumbnail suggests.

Actually, I’m pretty sure this is live. You can actually hear Britt laugh at one point.

    “Live-to-studio”? No. This is live.

Yeah, it’s obviously being recorded live as they film it.

  5. At first I wasn’t so hot about this song. After getting the album, I’m loving it!… the entire thing!

  6. Umm…this is awesome, right?

  7. Every artist is free to do as they wish- however, this as a single was a horrible choice and one of the worst songs on the album. Big Spoon fan but this is not their best work. Just calling a spade a spade. “Who Makes Your Money” is the gem of the entire album.

    • even after what I said about the album as a whole, I still agree with this statement. “Who Makes Your Money” or “Out Go the Lights” should have been the single choice

  8. I think the problem is that this album has NO SINGLES! It has stand out tracks, like “Nobody Gets Me But You” and “I Saw the Light”, but I couldn’t pick out a single if I tried. That being said, it has quickly become my favorite Spoon album; it’s just so easy to listen to all the way through. I recommend the LP and some scented candles.

    • agree with this too. this album just have a bona fide single like “The Way We Get By” or “The Underdog” to give people a context that can put the rest of the album in perspective, drawing up the other songs to an understandable level. watever, its music, its fun

  9. wow i fucking love this album. dont get me wrong gagagagaga, kill the moonlight, girls can tell, and gimmie fiction even perhaps are still better. but they take you on such a journey through the studio on this one, fading in and out, left and right. also the sounds they engineered their normally standard guitars, keys, and drums to make is pretty incredible. In my opinion, the album is slightly underrated, but not by much. spoon at bonaroo will be a fun time: http://iguessimfloating.blogspot.com/2010/01/news-bonnaroo-2010-lineup-leaked.html

  10. This more raw-live sound might be slightly better than the studio version.

  11. Britt’s voice sounds superb here. Looks like the Conan performance was just a fluke. Video and performance are both well done.

This album is growing on me, but I agree with the “no singles” posts. I like listening to it, but I can’t say there’s one song that I’d be ecstatic about seeing them play live. Which is a good thing, I guess, since they’re playing on the same night as Miles Kurosky, and I can only be in one place at one time.

  13. someone better call a WOOOOOOOO!!
