Last time we saw Jamie Lidell, he was helping Beck (and Feist, some Wilco folks) reinterpret Skip Spence’s Oar. The favor’s been returned: Beck, Feist, and Pat Sansone of Wilco show up on Lidell’s fourth full-length Compass. In fact, the way it’s spun, Lidell & Co. were inspired by the “chemistry” of the Record Club sessions, so they shifted focus to Compass. (Gonzales, drummer James Gadson, and co-producing Grizzly Bear Chris Taylor, among others, also lent assistance.) While you take a listen to the dusky, ambing, and satisfyingly raw title track, note that Lidell says he “wrote every song in a month … It’s been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into what I wanted to say and started writing.”

Compass is out 5/18 via Warp. He’ll take it on the road soon enough.

This is the best song I’ve heard this year, so far.

This is really neat…I’m excited for his album. This year seems like it will be really thrilling for music.
