Here We Go Magic - "Hard To Be Close" Video

In the video for Brooklyn band Here We Go Magic’s antic indie-folk song “Hard To Be Close,” three guys get stuck in an elevator for a very, very, implausibly long amount of time, and we see all the different effects that this level of isolation can have on the human brain. It’s fun! We’ve got the video below, as well as some comments from directors Livingston Johnson and Gregory Mitnick of Peking, and a list of the band’s forthcoming tour dates.

A statement from Peking:

This video was years in the making. Friends and idols of Peking, Chuck Stern and Ian of cult NYC Public Access show Roboshithead, made an earlier (and longer) incarnation of this video, titled “Maximum Capacity.”

“Hard To Be Close” stars the aforementioned Stern as Topher, who discovers over time how to turn his burning jealousy and intolerance into mercy and comradeship. The video also stars John Neails and Rob Frizalone.

The video was shot/stolen entirely on location at the Trump Tower complex in Miami-Dade over the course of one night. “We had a couple brushes with authorities, but we gave them candy and kisses, and that tided them over until the morning,” says Mitnick.

Working with three actors all night in a single elevator was a taxing and smelly affair. “We really worked through a lot of kinks with these boys,” says Johnson. “Our three actors brought a lot of baggage to the shoot, and we decided, for better worse, that it would enhance the video to work those things out on camera. And thank G-d we did.”
