Last month, Tom Scharpling directed Aimee Mann’s “Charmer” video, with Laura Linney as a robotic Aimee Mann doppelganger. That was great. This, somehow, is even better: Jon Hamm, actually playing Tom Scharpling as an oily huckster video director, proposing a shot-for-shot remake of the music video that made Mann famous: ’Til Tuesday’s early-MTV classic “Voices Carry.” Scharpling’s comedy partner Jon Wurster, the Superchunk and Mountain Goats drummer, plays the shithead leading man. And if you rewatch the “Voices Carry” video (which, seriously, do that), the “Labrador” video really is a shot-for-shot remake, and Wurster’s intentionally terrible acting really isn’t any sort of exaggeration. Also, Ted Leo’s wig is a thing of beauty. Seriously, this thing is head-spinning and awesome, and it’s below.
Mann’s new album Charmer is out now on SuperEgo.
