“We Found Love” is an unusually dark song for Rihanna, but in the hands of Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan, it’s several shades darker still. Performing the song on Zane Lowe’s BBC show, Khan leaves the original melody intact but reworks the arrangement, stripping it bare and slowing it down, rebuilding it into something spooky and spare. I love the original, but not surprisingly, Khan more than does justice to the song and exposes some of its core sadness.
If that stream comes down, go here and skip ahead to 1:20:55. Lowe’s interview with Khan starts at about 1:00, which includes a couple other live performances: “Laura” and “All Your Gold,” both from her forthcoming album The Haunted Man.

Since when was Rihanna’s “We Found Love” a dark song?
Rihanna’s music is pretty dark. I mean, every time I hear it, I just feel utterly depressed.
Roughly one year ago.
