2012 Gummy Awards: Vote Now

It’s that special time of year when media outlets begin to dictate to you what albums you were supposed to enjoy this year. Dictate! Guess nobody told them live in a democracy, man. Earlier this month you chose the leader of the free world, you can handle choosing the year’s best albums. But how about also choosing the year’s best videos, songs, new acts, indie rock crushes, TV shows, movies, and viral videos?

Welcome to the annual Gummy Awards, and as always, the Stereogum and Videogum families invite you to play a plum role in determining which artworks and humans are remembered as 2012′s finest. This year we’re sweetening the pot by giving away an iPad With Retina Display (WiFi + Cellular, 32GB) to one lucky voter selected randomly. 13. There were so many good albums this year. I went with Swing Lo Magellan, I think it’s the best, it’s great now and it will be great in 20 years. Most of the usual suspects are as good as advertised – especially channel ORANGE. The album I have listened to the most, though, is probably Bend Beyond by Woods – so good. A lot of these contenders seem sort of overrated – that Japandroids album is good, but calm down, and the Grizzly Bear album sounds like someone ran Jeff Buckley’s Grace through the CrosbyStills&Nashenator 3000. Also, Cloud Nothings? Seriously? So if Steve Albini produces the next Wavves album will everyone lose their shit?

  60. How come my comments are getting deleted?

My vote goes to David Byrne and St. Vincent – Love This Giant

  61. I was tempted to go with Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan because it’s such a solid album, but I went with John Talabot’s Fin for best album. It’s so god damned good and is really one of the best electronic albums I’ve heard in the past few years.

  62. Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel…

  63. Paralytic Stalks, Of Montreal.

  64. Miguels song “Do You” is how a pop song should be constructed. “Adorn” in a close second.

  65. What about verse of the year?

TI on Big Beast followed closely by A$AP on Hands on the Wheel

  66. Swearin’ – Swearin’

  67. Sharon Van Etten – Tramp

  68. Nude Beach is a great new band. I got to see them open for The Men at an awesome dive in Detroit. They played a wayyyy better show than The Men.

  69. Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan

  70. Best Album: Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel

  71. Jack White – Blunderbuss

Flying Lotus and Tame Impala made it a tough call though

  72. Pulling for Dirty Projectors for album of the year. I spent half the year listening to Swing Lo Magellan on an almost daily basis.

  73. Kendrick Lamarr – good kid, m.a.a.d. city!!

  74. Fiona Apple- The Idler Wheel…

  75. Beach House-Bloom

  76. Grimes – Visions

it’s the one I’ve enjoyed the most, anyway.

  78. Best album: Japandroids – Celebration Rock

  79. First aid kit- The lions Roar

  80. Citizens! – Here We Are

  81. iamamiwhoami – Kin

  82. It was a toss up between Father John Misty and Tame Impala.

But because the whole album flows masterfully, got to go with Tame Impala’s “Lonerism” as best album of 2012.

  83. Tame Impala’s “Lonerism” blew my away even more than their previous, which says alot! So yeah, the world wouldn’t go under if that’s is considered the best of 2012 :)

  84. Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory

  85. Japandroids – Celebration Rock

  86. Swans-The Seer!

  90. Does the album have to be from this year?

  91. Frank Ocean – Channel Orange

  92. chromatics – Kill for Love

  93. Father John Misty – Fear Fun

  94. Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel

As great as Frank Ocean’s album is, there’s just no competition. Fiona’s album is so deep, infinitely listenable, and virtuosic vocals + lyrics + musical writing and performance.

It’s been a great year, but as someone who tends to wear good albums out, this is the only one I have been able to continue listening to again and again. Every song is perfect, not a single misstep.

  95. Death Grips – The Money Store

Mainly because I’ve never heard anything like it before.

  96. Twin Shadow- Confess

  97. kendrick lamar – good kid m.A.A.d. city!

  98. G R I Z Z L Y B E A R – S H I E L D S

  99. Tame Impala – Lonerism
