Andrew W.K.'s Trip To Bahrain Cancelled By State Department

Andrew W.K. broke news last week that he would be visiting Bahrain as part of a State Department delegation devoted to spreading American culture overseas. Unfortunately, the trip has now been cancelled (according to DCist). A spokesperson for the State Department made this statement:

W.K. was also never designated a “cultural ambassador,” the spokesperson says, though embassies around the world routinely invite artistic and cultural figures to make appearances. But such events are subject to oversight, and W.K.’s offer of showing the Persian Gulf island nation the “power of positive partying,” did not pass muster.

“The embassy determined that was probably not a best choice and didn’t meet our standards,” the spokesperson says.

This sucks and all but I wouldn’t feel bad for W.K.; it’s pretty hard to kill that dude’s spirit. He’ll probably go to Bahrain anyway, provided that there’s a My Little Pony convention in the future.

  1. Say whatever you want about his music, Andrew WK is one of the most genuine dudes out there performing. If you complain about artists who are fake, phony and pretentious he isn’t one of them.

  2. Fundraiser to send Andrew WK to Bahrain anyway? Yeah? YEAH??

  3. Bahrain is a key country in the Middle East, and is overlooked by most Americans. Check out the writings of Glenn Greenwald and the journalism of Amber Lyon is reference to Bahrain. Some crazy shit going on over there, and the government of Bahrain is basically paying CNN to run fluff pieces about how “progressive” they are while killing civilians with tear gas and other methods.
