“Singer/multi-instrumentalist-songwriter” doesn’t quite convey all that’s at play with Japan’s Shugo Tokumaru, though it’s an accurate start. On his forthcoming In Focus?, the artist plays “an average of twenty instruments” on each of its 15 songs, which is so many instruments. “Decorate” is the 2013 LP’s first single, an ebullient pop cut stuffed with solos, arpeggios, an old school alarm clock, a couple of time signatures (it’s in 5 and in 6, by verse and by chorus), and all the magical-playland whimsy you can imagine. If history is any precedent, the album/track titles will be the only English on the record, which is inconsequential when music is this playful. Hear it:
