Tame Impala - "Mind Mischief" video

Big morning for new music videos! We already got new clips from the Knife and Grizzly Bear, and now here’s Tame Impala’s bug-out clip for the head-blown Lonerism riff-stomper “Mind Mischief.” The video, from director David Wilson, tells the story of a young private school boy having a moment with a ridiculously sexy stoner teacher. A good third of the video is pretty much an extended slo-mo ass-shot of said teacher, and another huge chunk of it is a gloriously NSFW psychedelic animated sequence. The whole idea of the Urban Outfitters-produced video is just dumb fun, but it’s all done pretty expertly. Watch the video and a making-of featurette below.

Lonerism is out now on Modular.

  1. Hmm, I thought it crossed a line a little between being sexy/plain fun and quite vulgar and kitsch. I just might be too uptight about this stuff, though…

  2. i wonder whether they would have the balls to shoot the same video if the teacher and the student interchanged sexes. female teacher – male student sex: art? male teacher – female student sex: felony?

      • I know this doesn’t deserve a reply, but you understand in the latter situation the sex would still be consensual on behalf of the female student right? The controversy would be more from the statuary rape concept than the physically forced rape concept. The idea that adults should be responsible enough to not take advantage of underdeveloped/developing adolescents (or younger) and less of a legal sense and more of a social norm, that adults such as teachers don’t misuse their roles as authority figures and mentors.

        • i understand your points about consensus and the idea that this situation is becoming more about social norms rather than laws. however, the female teacher in the video seduces the child and i don’t think the consensus argument would count under social norms, let alone the legal courts.

more importantly, the video would be far less acceptable if the adult in question was a male rather than a female teacher. that’s what i don’t understand about social norms. portraying this teacher-student sex in an aesthetic manner is pretty questionable.

          • Nah it is legally wrong hence statuary rape, but I was saying in addition to it being legally wrong because it is an adult having sex with a child, it also breaks other social norms that are necessarily separate laws by it being a teacher. I think it is viewed as particularly despicable for an adult with a relationship to children as a children does with students and in a different sense a priest has with altar boys because they’re misusing their roles as mentors, as role models, and as authority figures to either manipulate the desires of and urges of adolescents or in an array of different ways pressuring them into sexual relationships with the power they have over them.

          • *aren’t necessarily separate laws

          • and *”as a teacher does with students” not “as a children does with students”

      • probably you never thought about how a female teacher could exercise coersion to a student by threatening about grades or using psychological pressure. i guess that’s what happens when one thinks about sex only in the confines of penises and vaginas.

  3. I’d be hot for any teacher that drove a 2CV.

  4. I love me some Tame Impala, but I can’t help being bothered by the fact this is “co-produced” by Urban Outfitters.
