The xx - I Miss You

Beyoncé’s “I Miss You” is one of those records that just absolutely tears at the fabric of heartache and vulnerability. It’s produced so well — starts calm and glowing and ascends into the closest thing to a well-manicured banshee cry, the layers of vocals each expressing a different tenor of pain. When Frank Ocean revealed his own turbulent romantic past, the song took on a new cutting coat of pain — could this track he penned for Beyoncé be about him? Ouch. But here’s the xx doing a spartan rendition of the pop ballad, flipping it into a duet and mutating it from pull-your-guts-out-for-all-to-see into what feels like sweet nothings whispered to your partner who is far away. Check it out below.

  1. “Beyoncé’s “I Miss You” is one of those records that just absolutely tears at the fabric of heartache and vulnerability.”

    What?

  2. This is morose and dreadful. “I Miss You” did not need an injection of this “whatever-drug-makes-you-sluggish-and-slow.” No more xx schtick.

  3. I don’t get the fascination “indie” hipster types seem to have with soulless, mainstream garbage like Beyonce.

  4. Maybe it’s a little bit of a boring cover, but if the xx did it any other way they would just sound like everyone else these days who are playing with the same sound.
