David Bowie - "The Stars Are Out Tonight" video

David Bowie announced his imminent new album The Next Day, his first in 10 years, with a new song and video called “Where Are We Now?” The song was strong, but the video was absolute muddled weirdness. But with a new video for the sweeping, impressive new song “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” Bowie is, once again, an artist whose visual presence demands to be taken seriously. In the clip, he and fellow glowing alien Tilda Swinton star, making the ultimate leap by playing a solidly predictable bourgie couple. They’re haunted by Lynchian visions of freaky, androgynous pop stars, one of whom bears a striking resemblance to a much younger Bowie. Directed by Floria Sigismondi, it’s an intriguing and ultimately funny video, and you can watch it below.

The Next Day is out 3/12 on Columbia.

  1. I am not worthy, Lord Bowie and High Priestess Swinton.

  2. What just happened?

  3. I am cautiously optimistic…

  4. what is the intro music? it was perfectly dark and weird. an excerpt from another track?

    • I really really hope it’s part of another track on the album. That was the best part for me! Looking at the time of this video vs. the track time on iTunes it’s unfortunately not part of this song.

    • ‘Plan’ (previewed at the start of the video for ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’) is a stunning instrumental rush, straight outta Berlin, a piledriver chord-drone extended over click-beats, like an elusive found fragment, a blue-blue-electric-blueprint.

From The Quietus review. The record seems to be great.

  5. Andrej Pejic kissed Bowie and my boy ovaries exploded.

  6. I always forget how good of an actor David Bowie can be.

  7. This is like that scene in “Star Trek” when young Spock met old Spock.

  8. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  9. It’s the most beautifully ridiculous thing I’ve seen in months, if not years. Also, anyone else think that Bowie looks disturbingly like Ronald Reagan in this vid?

    Good track, too.

  10. “where are we now” came on the radio the other day when I was with my dad (he was a teenager when Ziggy Stardust came out). His reaction: “wtf happened to david bowie??”

I think he would approve of this one.

  11. I just received a call from 1995. They say they want Floria Sigismondi back.

  12. Just amazing if you are aged enough to even get it. Anyone here under 30 has grown up in a celebrity world and don’t understand the utter facade celebrity truly is. This flip, watching the celebrities stalk the normal folks with a “nice life”, ultimately overtaking it, is really topical and clever. Very Bowie. Very astute.

By the way, speaking of the over 30′s (40′s?), please notice that the upper right corner of the fan magazine Bowie picks up in the “bodego” is a picture of him from the movie “The Man who fell to Earth”. And Tilda’s clear visor is a clear reference to the same worn in that movie while playing ping-pong with Bowie. And at the end of the video, when the roles have been reversed (or the cycle begun again?), Bowie is carrying what I would guess to be an Oscar…or meant to be.

  13. Always provocative. That’s Bowie, an artist forever imagining and realizing.
