My Morning Jacket - "Leaving On A Jet Plane" (John Denver Cover)

As a huge Mark Kozelek fan, I can’t help but wonder how one goes about assembling a John Denver tribute album in 2013 and doesn’t find space for a Kozelek rendition; is it because he put out his own Denver tribute back in 2000 (featuring Low, Bonnie Prince Billy, and THREE Red House Painters tracks)? True, the new ATO Denver tribute, The Music Is You, features a bunch of worthy artists, including J Mascis with Sharon Van Etten, Lucinda Williams, and Evan Dando — all of whom about balance out the fact that Train is on here, too. My Morning Jacket open the album with a gentle rendition of “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” on which they make a sad song even sadder. Listen.

The Music Is You tracklist:

01 My Morning Jacket – “Leaving on a Jet Plane”
02 Dave Matthews – “Take Me To Tomorrow”
03 Kathleen Edwards – “All of My Memories”
04 J Mascis and Sharon Van Etten – “Prisoners”
05 Train – “Sunshine On My Shoulders”
06 Old Crow Medicine Show – “Back Home Again”
07 Lucinda Williams – “This Old Guitar”
08 Amos Lee – “Some Days are Diamonds”
09 Allen Stone – “Rocky Mountain High”
10 Brett Dennen and Milow – “Annie’s Song”
11 Evan Dando – “Looking For Space”
12 Brandi Carlile and Emmylou Harris – “Take Me Home, Country Roads”

The Music Is You is out 4/2 via ATO.

you never know how long you’ve been waiting for train to cover ‘sunshine on my shoulders’ until it happens but then BAM.

  2. This makes me want to take off my pants and jacket.

  3. I kind of can’t stand John Denver, but I love John Denver covers.

  4. Any John Denver compilation without “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” is bullshit.
