Shut Up, Dude

This week we announced the lineup to Range Life 2013, our annual event during SXSW. If you’ll be at the fest, please join us for free Taco Bell. If you’ll be stuck in a cubicle somewhere, Morrissey will probably have some beef for you. In addition to Moz, we had plenty to write about since the last Shut Up, Dude. We launched two new columns: Backtrack and The Black Market. We ranked the weirdest U2 crafts, the best Rilo Kiley songs, and the Rolling Stones’ discography. We deconstructed 20 years of Thom Yorke and 10 years of the Postal Service. We chatted with Kurt Vile and DJed with the Ruby Suns. Our Album Of The Week went to Autre Ne Veut and our Monthly Mix went to Spotify. Yeah Yeah Yeahs spread the gospel and David Bowie streamed his comeback. Check out the best and worst responses to all of this below.

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

maybe i’ll get flamed for this, maybe not. at this point i’m not really caring. in rainbows is my favorite radiohead album. once all the hype from their distribution fell down, we were left with their most top to bottom incredible album since kid a. it’s my go to when i want to listen to them. for a band that had nothing left to surprise with, making an album like that was more shocking. they’ll always throw a left hook when you least expect them to.

The next Morrissey story I see better be “Stereogum Editors Vow to Never Mention Morrissey Again Unless He Actually Does Something of Merit” or I’m just done with this place. But hey, gotta sell them adspaces.

Stereogum: We Got a Column for Everything.

The site could probably use a redesign soon to organize all of these new features sprouting up on a daily basis in a way where they don’t get lost amongst themselves, or possibly a table of contents. There’s an online magazine on here somewhere — Your design team just needs to piece it together.

Also, exploiting Sandy Hook in his hissy fit to make him look like he has the moral high ground is 10x more offensive than anything Jimmy Kimmel said.

This is a pretty intellectually dishonest response. Making fun of depression? Obesity? Dragging Sandy Hook in to make a point? That’s pretty gross, Morrissey.

Watch out, Stereogum, you’ll soon incur the wrath of Morrissey for consistently including him in a feature with the word “Beef” in the title.

I have to tell you Tom. You are an annoying writer. You drop f bombs and use hipster terminology like “solid” and “shitty” and all the other annoying hipster blog buzz words like no other. It’s incredibly annoying. That’s all I wanted to say. Read Robert Christgau and lay off the “Cool”-aid for a while. And repent for your “In Defense of Mumford and Sons” heresy.

THIS WEEK’S EDITOR’S CHOICE (AMRIT)

Comments (85)
  1. Weird week. Someone wrote me an e-mail telling me that my commentary on here is consistently negative, distracting and hostile. I don’t really know what to do about that because I think this week especially, I’ve been phrasing my thoughts in a manner that isn’t necessarily trying to offend anyone, but rather be mindful to the content in a way where I can show those who enjoy whatever it is that I respect their differing opinions. Unfortunately, I have found more criticisms that good things to say about music since ’13. I guess this confirms what I suspected all along. I I just suck at living, am unlikeable and not wanted.

    • “SOMEONE” eh? nudge nudge wink wink

      Have an upvote bro.

    • scruffy  |   Posted on Mar 1st +10

Michael! Don’t despair! I honestly really appreciated most of your comments this week! You said things I would like to say in a way better than I could have (as evidenced by that disaster of a sentence).

    • Don’t let go, you’ve got the music in you. One dance left , this world is gonna pull through. Don’t give up, you’ve got a reason to live.

    • dude you’ve been great this week. i want to get to know this week’s michael_, and make sweet love to him

    • Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, all these great critics would throw bananas at people. They just didn’t care. It’s intensely difficult to be in a public forum, of course, and every downvote means somebody disagrees with your perspective, but having read most of your posts, I think you’re one of the more true to thyself and to thy music tastes personalities on the board. To say you suck at living, are unlikable or not wanted does not apply to you at all and I’m sure nobody on this board would think that. I don’t know if you’ll read this, but all in all, be true to yourself. Your writing is great, your blog awesome, you’re a likeable guy and you just have to believe in great things for you. And I am 100% for real. Bottom line, when it comes to it, we are all people. Some of us her hide behind avatars, sarcasm, fan worship or hipster “cool”, but at the end of the day, we’re merely people. I’m sure most of us feel insecure in some way or another, some more then others. I just encourage you to be confident in making your literary stride. I wish you all the best Michael.

      • Thanks — all of you, that goes for. I 100% don’t mean to phish for compliments or anything, but I think it’s so weird that every several months, someone from here or a reader who doesn’t necessarily post on here contacts me. Sometimes it’s kind and constructive, sometime it isn’t. Sometimes it’s just neutral, and I almost feel like they’re writing the message not for my benefit, but for theirs. I guess my bewilderment is in why they care to focus on my posts and / or opinions. Granted, I’m on here consistently, but I don’t see what others see and I assume my posts are only read by a small circle of people of “regulars.”

I have my downvote moments that are often induced by other stressors in life that make me seem overtly honest, but yeah — Right on, Luke. I guess I’m taken most aback by the fact that even being thoughtfully honest and disagreeable over a subject I am genuinely interested in isn’t even enough apparently. So what’s the use of the comments section if that’s the case…

        • that’s great and all, but you didn’t really address the love-making mentioned before

          • As long you don’t look anything like the nude hobbit from last week’s Shut Up Dude — Well, heck, I’m open to it!

        • Hey you rock Michael. I respect your sincerity, passion and transparency. Those are the only qualities I know how to relate to. In many ways we’re similar I think. I have feared what people think of me, or my passionate perspectives on things, fear their rejections, not being welcomed into the hip circle, whatever. But I’ve learned to just rock on…mine own self being true. And so, I do, and do the same brutha ;) (stereogum/breakfast club hug). Your gummy pal, Luke

    • Mike. You dont suck at living. You have good taste in music and are an articulate and cutting observer and critic of something called music that you know inside and out. If you don’t like the music of ’13 that’s cool with me. There’s a LOT of amazingness to come.

I have two words for you. Overgrown, bro.

    • Morrissey_

      • You’re a real tool to write that thomasbrownster. Apparently you’re the type to mock somebody’s open hearted transparency. Go troll another board, eh?

    • This right here…

“I just suck at living, am unlikeable and not wanted.”

Seriously brother, Stereogum has fuck all to do with any of that. It’s an internet music blog. Ya know?

  2. Oh wow, I’d like to, of course, thank everyone who up-voted my comment, I’m so grateful to all of you, thanks to Scott and the rest of the Stereogum team for providing the platform to allow me to do my thing, and of course to everyone commenting with me; D-tits, Michael_, Nathan Christensen, Kevin Broydrick, Raptor Jesus, Corky Anderson! [laughter from the audience], I know there are so many that I’ve forgotten, bit it’s an honour just to be working with you guys [orchestral music starts to play as producer nervously checks time]. Most people don’t realise the work that goes on behind the scenes with these comments, so of course I want to mention my entire crew, the people who read me the articles, the person who switches my laptop on, my incredibly talented set of writers who I just know I couldn’t do this without, you’re all amazing guys! This is for you! [music grows louder as host tries to usher me off stage] I know this is a joyous occasion, but I’d just like to take a minute to talk about something that’s really close to my heart [security staff edge towards podium], for too long chocolate bar manufacturers have been changing the shape of their product, claiming they’re giving you a “smoother” or “silkier” sweetened cocoa solids experience, when in fact they’re just giving you less chocolate for your money! [resists attempted manhandling by security, who desperately try to haul me off stage] WE CAN’T LET THEM WIN, STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS AS CONSUMERS! DOWN WITH THE EVIL CAPITALIST SWEETS MANUFACTURERS! [curtain comes down as an awkward silence falls over the theatre].

  3. #2 lowest comment…

    what’d i miss??

  4. I’m really starting to think awarding people like Corky and RubJon for their jackassery is a bad idea… anyone else?

    • For all we know they’re all the same person anyway. Half of them have the same damn emo shit for their profile pics.

    • RubJon deserves all of the awards. Corky has potential but needs to go to trollschool. filthydubber can eat a dick.

    • I am not RubJon and RubJon is not I. I want to publicly clarify that to the Stereogum Press. I take some umbrage at being called a “Jackass” good sire. Your posts and taste in music Mr. Chair, frankly, I admire and in no way shape or form am I here to harass the board. In time to come, you’ll look back at us bizarre lovable nuts as something that gives you a chuckle on those cold wintry nights. Where on earth do you find a board with a nerd from Vassar named Corky, a triumvirate of trolling bears, a rubber johnny, a pig that is a clone of myself, and a freakin’ recipe bear? I’d say it’s time to lighten up and just enjoy the show along with the music!
      -Respectfully,
      Corky Anderson
P.S. I finally got my degree in Calcium Anthropology-the study of milkmen.

  5. I don’t know what to make for dinner and I only take advice from bears. Is there anyone who can help me out?

  6. I’m gonna go eat some meat now

  7. When it rains, my window leaks and makes patterns on my wicker blinds. Sometimes it’s ovaries, one time it looked just like Majora’s Mask, but tonight I got the cat-bear thing from R.E.M’s “Monster.”

  8. Just so you all know, im not actually going to kill any animals.

  9. I love that Corky Anderson was #2 lowest rated and Porky Panderson is #1. Trolls galore if there ever were.

  10. wow, a new album from David Bowie AND Iggy and the Stooges..what is it? 1973? it’s gonna be a great year! That has nothing to do with this weeks comments but i was so excited I had to say it somewhere.

  11. OK, Corky. We all know all of these are you. This Lynchian nightmare world you’ve created for yourself and are inhabiting would make a great movie, but there’s only one professor spacetime and he’s a dude named Brandon for Terre Haute, so seriously. Stop. I think you’re clever, but this is a music website, not an “I’m clever” website.

  12. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

  13. Well, Charli XCX’s debut album finally has a release date for anyone who cares! April 16th in the US! I figured I’d just mention it here, what with everything else going on in this comment section already. Here’s the track-list, copied and pasted from Wikipedia:

    1. “Nuclear Seasons”
    2. “You (Ha Ha Ha)”
    3. “Take My Hand”
    4. “Stay Away”
    5. “Set Me Free”
    6. “Grins”
    7. “So Far Away”
    8. “Cloud Aura”
    9. “What I Like”
    10. “Black Roses”
    11. “You’re the One”
    12. “How Can I”
    13. “Lock You Up”

Glad to see that “Grins” and “So Far Away” made the cut from her Heartbreaks & Earthquakes mixtape. “Cloud Aura” is not so great, but this still should be a pretty awesome album on the whole.

  14. I totally missed the bear thing. Definitely could be good. Keep it up <3

  15. Bears were pretty funny. Haha. Recipe Bear is one of their names….yes, RECIPE BEAR. He comes onto the board and suggest recipes to try. That’s all he does. I love Stereogum :)

  16. Please no more bears.

  17. How’s everyone doing with the new Phoenix album, by the way? What surprised me most about it is that (and probably my own fault) I was looking for that one mega single to combat “1901″ or “Lisztomania” in it, but it never really comes. Instead, it’s a very solid complete album experience. Those drums are going to sound huge at a festival setting. The production around Thomas Mars’ vocals kinda-sorta make him sound like Kevin Barnes in some instances. The takeaway: It’s an album focused on technical proficiency more so than writing the perfect pop song.
