Animal Collective

A lot of people, myself included, got a nice way to curb some of the madness that took over when the new Animal Collective album was on the horizon last year — radio! Seriously, Centipede Hz Radio kept me sane for those last weeks of the summer; gradually giving fans bits of information, songs that inspired the record, and finally the full album paired with Abby Portner’s trippy visuals. The band really connected with their fans in those last couple weeks, and (without any leaks for once) got us all online to hear Centipede Hz, for the first time, together. Now Centipede Hz Radio is back again if you missed any of the old broadcasts. Just go to and you can pretend that it’s summer 2012 again.

In other news, Animal Collective have released some psychedelic live videos of their New York performance at Terminal 5 last year, which will probably give you a good idea of what to expect when they go on tour this month. The Creator’s Project, who helped relaunch the radio show and release the live videos, is also doing a contest to win a pair of tickets at certain shows, you can check that out here. Watch their performance of “Applesauce,” “Moonjock,” And “Amanita,” and check out tour dates below.

  1. The polite thing to do would be to put this mess behind them and put out a much better album soon so that we can all blissfully pretend that Centipede Hz never existed.

  2. yeah i mean, i like burnout, monkey riches and applesauce- but i haven’t played this album in months- I agree that they are capable of MUCH MUCH better.

  3. Centipede Hz is fantastic! This is obviously a matter of opinion. I absolutely loved it, and this was the best I ever heard them live. I wish they had either Brother Sport of Today’s Supernatural up, though, because those were the best ones from the set.

  4. Centipede Hz seems to me to be the most polarizing record of theirs (a least from Sung Tongs and after). I was one of the bigger defenders of it when it came out, but I haven’t listened to it in many a month. Perhaps this means that it does not hold up long term, but I’d like to think that one day I’ll truly fall into it and the universe will make sense (which is what happened to me with Strawberry Jam, which has since become my fave). I feel the potential there, love the live drumming and instrumentation but just haven’t gotten that long term 4+ hour erection for it that hurts so good that I have with their others (figurative boner)

  5. I still like Centipede Hz. It’s not their best, but I prefer it to quite a few of their albums. Plus, Amantia floors me every time.

  6. I really liked Centipede Hz as well. Definitely some stand outs (Applesauce, Monkey Riches) but a solid album. Not their best but it’s just not for some people.

I think Avey’s blonde hair is the real tragedy.
