Shut Up, Dude

It’s been a great couple of days for ambitious music videos, with highly stylized clips from Phoenix, Beach House, and the Knife all arriving towards the end of the week. (Not to mention our most popular story of the week was a Biffy Clyro video.) In addition to posting all of those, we ranked Modest Mouse’s discography and the Notorious B.I.G.’s 10 best songs. We gave Album Of The Week honors to Waxahatchee’s Cerulean Salt and Backtracked Mirah’s Advisory Committee. And we spoke with Marnie Stern and Caveman. Here’s how the best and worst comments on all that stuff panned out…

So much hate for basement bloggers in this piece. You do know some of us actually bother to write more than two sentences about a song and don’t just regurgitate whatever trend is collectively determined by the mass to be good at the moment, right?

It would’ve been cool to include Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, The Fruit that Ate Itself, No ones First and You’re Next, and Building Nothing out of Something.

You know what would be a great way for 2013′s indie culture to go back to 2003′s? If content on large music websites wasn’t driven by online advertising goals.

do you REALLY like crazy in love?? i’m just always a bit dubious when people list off a bunch of (mainly) indie rock bands and then there’s the random pop star in there.

Wait until the truth about Isaac Brock comes out publicly. This guy has had it coming for years. Can’t wait to see the public reaction of who this man really is. Truth is stranger than fiction.

How many times have we heard the artist “Going back to basics” bla bla bla routine. Sheep all get suckered in and if this were released on the heels of earthling people would cry foul because they would say how stale and not of the times it is. Its just critics and “fans” trying to deify him and the album for publicity and a buzz. So lame. So contrived. So utterly ridiculous in a pathetic way. And, before you feel the need to be asinine and downvote my legit opinions, just take a look at that cover…to be nice but blunt, pretty stupid cover. Photoshopped in someone’s trendy hipster L.A. loft no doubt to get street cred for “going back to basics”. Even the cover has no real significance or imagination. I’m a die hard fan of Bowie and love the more obtuse category like Low and Lodger, but this album is going to just get all this critical praise ( looking at you stereogum too) because its a back to basics approach, when if it came out after reality it would probably have just been ignored. Only because it comes out after so many years its time to christen it some wonderful masterpiece. So stand in front of it and lap it up doggies….cause this guy may not be a paid music critic like our man tom here but i’m not buying into the hype machine. We should have a record social commentary page too on stereogum where people like me and others who see through the blind spots of music and the blogosphere can really tell it like it is.

THIS WEEK’S EDITOR’S CHOICE (SCOTT)

Dick Litman | Mar 5th Score:1

don’t know where else to put this, but i went and saw free energy last night and spoke with the lead singer for an extensive amount of time (his doing, not mine. although i enjoyed it, i didn’t want to be THAT guy) anyways, i brought up his recent commenting on the site and he had the nicest things to say about everyone. he loves us! he thought i was michael at first, and so naturally i assumed michael’s identity and told him a bunch of lies. totally kidding, but yeah he had nice things to say about you michael, and i confirmed them. and he loves tom, as do i. we had a very large deconstructing ian cohen discussion, which was very (de)constructive (?) anyways, random post, just thought it was interesting. they kicked major ass live, didn’t know i could groove like that

  1. #1, yay, but this week didn’t get any less weird than last week. Again, I received an e-mail from my disgruntled wordsmith and their associated wordsmith peer because I had found the person’s entire criticism of my negativity had made its way onto their widely read Tumblr, and in that context, it seemed less polite. What is annoying is that each of these people have written to me in the past already, will be very polite in their criticism, and then I will write back a well thought out response and I hear NOTHING in return. So to get another pouncy e-mail, it’s really a downer and frustrating. I should note, these people are paid music writers whose work you’ve probably ran into lately on some of your favorite music sites, but I’m not one to say names, so…

And then in honor of International Woman’s Day, I tweeted out that it was awesome how much people cared about WOMEN (and linked to the track “Eyesore.”) Well, one of my followers took great offense to this, called to action that everyone follow me and pegged me as sexist. Great.

I’m so fed up withnot even being able to enjoy this anymore. My blog, especially. Sorry, I should be celebrating #1 but I’m not having fun anymore.

  2. What the trolls did to David Bowie this week was seriously NOT cool.

  3. This was a bad week for me.

  4. Michael_ getting critical e-mails, recipe bears, what else have I missed? I’ve checked the comments every so often, but if anyone wants to sum up the past two months in a few sentences that would be great.

    • Well, the latest troll these days has been Corky Anderson/Porky Panderson/trollingnear/mediatorbear/recipebear/various other aliases. Of all these, recipebear tends to be the most tolerated, while Corky Anderson remains the most hated. Then there’s filthydubber, a rubberjohnny-ish looking troll who rubjohn himself adamantly disavows. filthydubber takes trolling to whole new levels of misogyny and homophobia.

“Shut Up, Dude” now occasionally seems to exist in the Twilight Zone, especially a couple weeks ago when posts were appearing out of chronological order and someone posted a hobbit dick-pic (I didn’t see it before it was removed), then claimed to have been hacked. Oh, and music sometimes gets discussed as well.

    • You’re back!

      • Hi Nate, I don’t think I can say that I’m back full time but it’s nice to check in. For the most part, I’ve had no chance to comment during the day. I’ve checked out the comment section a few times at night and I’ve gotta say it’s been bittersweet not being able to participate.

    • music?

    • The word is out. The tribe has spoken.

  5. Ahhhh! I just saw Dick’s comment about speaking with Free Energy’s Paul, and how I randomly came up in conversation? Okay, weird. That guy is a bonafide sweetheart, though. Actually, Dick is, too. Totally made up for what was a dumb day. Thank you for that!

  6. awww editors choice! I feel so proud, it put a smile on my face…….but getting back to it, I wish good luck to Ben Gibbard and his Alopecia (and I’d appreciate it if we could all be sensitive to it)

  7. Why are all the posts about Odd Future the ones that have closed comment sections? Are you guys afraid of the RubJon freak-outs that might happen?

Those new Earl songs seem pretty great. It was nice to hear that Mac Miller worships the Based God, at least we can agree on something.

    • The Stereogum staff both fear and subtly encourage trolling. They won’t commit either way. It’s like those articles Tom writes at the end of the week where he says something crazy that he doesn’t really believe to “generate discussion” and then takes a step back from the statement so people still respect his critical opinion. The whole site is like that. Troll! No troll! Money first! Art first! Listen to the devil! Listen to the angel!

      • dude, you trolling?

        • Ha, no, I’ve never trolled actually. I always say exactly what I think. If it gets a response, well, okay. If not, that’s fine.

          • -corky anderson

          • Okay, so I watched this thread to get some context and…this is one of those moments where I just can’t know if someone’s comment was meant to be ironic or not. I really, really want to believe it was. However, if you didn’t know what Mad Men is, and that you were meant to know Dick Litman (it’s actually “Whitman”) is Don Draper’s real name, you must be a moron. Most everyone on Stereogum has had an avatar for the previous 8 minutes or longer. Dick Litman was recreating/making fun of Jon Hamm’s iconic Mad Men character. He probably doesn’t have that haircut and he might wear glasses or something. Type “Dick Whitman″ into Google Images if you have any doubt . He makes a pretty manly character that gets drunk and bangs ladies, but there’s no denying that he has a really nice head of hair.

          • what nathan said

          • I wasn’t being ironic. I don’t watch Mad Men. I know who Jon Hamm is, I know that he is on Mad Men, and I have a very vague idea of what the show is about, but I have never seen it and I don’t know or care about the characters’ names. Even though I watch a lot of TV shows, I’ve never been able to get myself to watch Mad Men; maybe it’s all the suits. I actually did Google the screename and “Mad Men” because I figured from the picture of Jon Hamm that it could be a reference to the show. However, since I did not Google the name from the show, all I got was a bunch of nothing. I still don’t care about Mad Men, and everything I said before still stands.

          • By the way, if you’d like to replicate my search, make sure you use quotation marks around the screenname.

          • I’m trying to figure out if you noticed I copied your comment.

          • Oh my god I just got the joke behind dick’s name. It appears I’m incredibly slow.

  9. Lot of good vibes going here. You guys are awesome.

  10. I feel like such a porky panderson :(

  11. good night stereogum-ites :) Scott, Corky Anderson did that naughty thing and trolled as Bowie :( As result, he has no more weekly porridge rights and must listen to a mash-up of John Tesh and Yoko Ono. Please forgive Recipe Bear!
P.S. Corky Anderson can burn in hell.

  12. Its puts the lotion on its skin
or else it gets the bear again

  13. Yep, this whole bear stuff has gone too far.

  14. Hey guys, I found a stream of the new Phosphorescent album.
