Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Daze

He’s already four albums deep into his career, but the cloudy-eyed singer-songwriter and languid guitar hero Kurt Vile seems like he could just be hitting his stride. Vile’s new album Wakin On A Pretty Daze arrives next week, and the two songs we’ve heard from it, “Wakin On A Pretty Day” and “Never Run Away,” are among the most breezily gorgeous things he’s ever done. If they’re any indication, the new album could be one for the ages. And now we can figure it out for ourselves, since Wakin On A Pretty Daze is streaming online. Listen to it below.

  1. AOTY Material. Impressive stuff.

  2. Yep, it’s pretty great. Over an hour of music spread out over eleven songs and it never bogs down, which is quite the achievement. He knows what he’s doing, basically.

  3. There are some really great songs here. Other than the two released tracks, Too Hard is an 8-minute soul crusher, and Shame Chamber is just awesome. It plays like more of an album than his first three, and it’s soooo well balanced. Looking forward to multiple spins this week.

  4. Could only listen to half but so far so good. Now all we need is a preview of the new albums by The Knife and James Blake. I don’t envy whoever has to pick AOTW for next week out of those 3.

  5. Why did this only last about 5 minutes on the homepage before fading into the Stereogum abyss?

  6. Can’t bloody wait to hear this! ‘Smoke Ring for My Halo’ is probably the finest record of the last 7-8 years. Yeah, that’s right. What a treasure. It unfolds with one subtly beautiful song after another. Completely blew me away and continues to.
