MTV‘s got a review and photos of Coldplay’s recent KCRW gig, where Chris & Co. debuted five songs from the forthcoming X&Y (out 6/7). Even better: Jason Productshop points us to bootleg MP3s of two of them — “What If,” a mid-tempo ballad about Apple, and “Speed Of Sound,” the fairly more rockin’ first single.

The new songs were very good. Coldplay opened up with one of them. They utilized the ascending notes as in the opening of 2001. The new songs have more textures to them while maintaining their own style of melody and songcraft. The new album will be great.
I’ve given the full gig a listen and I’m trying no to pass too much judgement, but I’ll say this – I saw them at the 9:30 club in D.C. before When a Rush of Blood had been released – I think “In My Place” was already released, but that was it. The point is, the first time you heard “The Scientist,” or “Clocks” or even a bside at the time, “1:36″ you knew they were working in a higher-gear of songwriting.
Unfortunately, after a few listens, “What If” sounds like a band now stuck in neutral.
But it was their first time out … here’s hoping the album packs more of a punch.
Are they still dedicating songs to John Kerry?
