Janelle Monae - "Q.U.E.E.N."

In the past few years, Janelle Monáe has released a far-reaching and ambitious robo-futuristic concept album and sung on a #1 single, and the only other person to accomplish both those things in an entire career might be David Bowie. She is a hero, and now she’s given us the first single from her forthcoming album The Electric Lady, the follow-up to the sprawling and great The ArchAndroid. “Q.U.E.E.N.” is an irresistibly funky vamp-strut with Afrobeat horns and Princely synth-squelches and guest-vocals from Erykah Badu and a rap verse that’s better than it has any right to be. It’s great, and you can hear it below.

“Q.U.E.E.N.” is for sale at iTunes right now, and The Electric Lady should be coming soon.

  1. I cannot wait for drag queens to demolish this.

    Welcome back, Ms. Monae.

  2. Now she needs a #1 single of her own, because if anyone in pop music (she wears many styles but I think pop is the widest reaching; David Bowie is an apt comparison) deserves it, it’s her. The ArchAndroid is probably one of the most adventurous and out-there badass pop albums of the last, like, I dunno, twenty years. Super excited to hear the follow-up. Great tune here.

    • Concur. I dunno why she’s so slept on… Metropolis: The Chase Suite is also pretty fantastic.
“they’ll be like ooooooh let them eat cake but we eat waangs and throw them bones on the ground”
jesus christ, this song has so many good lines!! also kinda surprised a badu/monae collab took this long to happen..

  3. Giving “Get Lucky” a run for it’s money for funkiest track of 2013.
