Kanye West - Yeezus

Last night, Kanye West held a listening party for his new album Yeezus, filling the New York studio Milk with luminaries like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and our own Claire Lobenfeld, who might have more to add to this report later. Kanye reportedly claimed that he doesn’t care if the album leaks, and he spent the event in the corner of the room, headbanging. The album, reportedly much darker than past affairs, has a pretty fascinating guest list. Billboard reports that Daft Punk worked on “three or four” of its tracks, and both Justin Vernon and Chief Keef, amazingly, show up on the same song; it’s called “Can’t Handle My Liquor.” One track samples both TNGHT’s monstrous “Higher Ground” and Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit.” The Chicago rapper King Louie shows up, as do Travi$ Scott and producer Arca. And Rick Rubin, who’s great at helping focus ambitious projects like this, serves as executive producer. So there you have it: A bunch more reasons why we can’t fucking wait for this album. Watch a clip of Kanye speaking at the event below.

Yeezus is out 6/18 on Def Jam.

  1. My body is ready.

  2. Currently trying to build a time machine so I can fast forward to June 18.

  3. I want a detailed write up by Claire (please), SO jealous

  4. It just hit me that we will have ourselves a new Kanye album in a week. Very excited for this.

ALSO, are we just collectively ignoring the new Boards of Canada album? Stereogum covered all the marketing hullabaloo leading up to the release, but no mention of the album now that it’s out? I wanna discuss this thing, it’s weird and awesome and kinda off putting all at once!

About 4% of my motivation for posting this comment was to use the word “hullabaloo”

    • Well. They Pre-Eval’d Deafheaven, so I’d guess BoC is getting AotW.

I’ll be there to talk about it too :)

But I’ll be damned if I’m not checking sites every day for a leak of Yeezus. I CAN’T WAIT!!

  5. Kanye is going full Kanye on this one.

  6. Pitchfork Top Albums of 2013 Predictions:

    1. Kanye West scores 9.6-10.0 and is awarded album of the year.
    2. Pitchfork stands by their 9.0+ reviews of Vampire Weekend and Disclosure allowing them to finish in the Top 5 and Top 10 respectively. MBV, however, get a GY!BE-like 12 or 11 spot.
    3. Savages, Boards of Canada (hopefully), Daft Punk (unfortunately), and maybe Drake (again?) are bumped up just inside the Top 10.
    4. Arcade Fire’s new album is given a This Is Happening-like Top 10 (possibly Top 5) because of their career as a whole (even though everyone agrees it’s not their best).
    5. Deafheaven (unless given the but-it’s-metal diss), Youth Lagoon (ugh), Kurt Vile (nice!), Janelle Monae, No Age, and others round out the bottom half of the Top 20. DJ Koze, Baths, Iceage, and maybe the Haxan Cloak are given sorry-I-mean-we-liked-it-and-all-but-no-band-photo-for-you spots between 30 and 21 (ooo, so close!).
    6. If tUnE-yArDs, EMA, Shabazz Palaces, Danny Brown, or Earl Sweatshirt release an LP, it’s going Top 20 at least. If Joanna Newsom (omg please), top 10.
    7. Frank Ocean (fingers crossed), D’Angelo (lol), or the Avalanches (double lol) drop a gem on us, upsetting predictions 2-6.

Mark your calendar to check this page again Friday, December 20 and see the results.

    • Daft Punk and MBV will be top ten.

Fuck Buttons is going to be huge.

I highly doubt they’ll give Kanye AotY again.

I hope they put Deafheaven in the Top 10. I remember in 2005 when they had Scott Walker and BORIS at #10 & #9 … but that time could be long behind us now.
