Rough Trade Opening Brooklyn Store This Fall

According to a Billboard report, famed London record store Rough Trade will sidle up stateside on November 25. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn outpost will not only sell music (new only, no used), but will serve as a “‘healthy-sized place to hang out’ for music-lovers” with space for in-store performances and after-hours concerts (put together by The Bowery Presents). This is a plan that is long in the making, originally announced in April of last year with no official opening date until today. The delay was largely due to construction and building setbacks, so despite the slow dominoes game of boarded up record stores in NYC (Bleecker Bob’s and Sound Fix, which, in its original location, was also a bar and venue), this store will open. In the same report, it was noted that vinyl sales have increased 31.9% in 2013 alone and “according to SoundScan, continuing a hockey-stick growth phase for the format that dates back to the first Record Store Day in 2008.” The Brooklyn shop will be housed in a former film prop warehouse, measuring in at 15,000 square feet, which should nicely facilitate their operational plans. Says Rough Trade Retail Group co-president Stephen Godfrey, “This city demands something truly special, and hopefully that’s what we can achieve in collaboration with the people that visit and go on to define the space over the months and years to come.”
