The L.A.-based singer Kelela has carved out something of a niche for herself as the one vocalist able to reliably provide an electric emotional jolt to tracks from forward-thinking dance producers like Teengirl Fantasy and Kingdom. She’s not a house diva, though she can play that role; she’s a nuanced and sensual stylist, and there’s a lot of personality in her intimate coos. On her debut mixtape Cut 4 Me, Kelela has lined up tracks from many of the producers associated with the great Night Slugs label. We’ve already posted the Nguzunguzu collab “Enemy,” and the tape also features tracks with Kingdom, Girl Unit, Bok Bok, Jam City, and others. But it’s not a dance compilation; it’s a triumph of dizzy songcraft. Check it out below.
