Keep Calm And Listen To Britpop

In a new interview with The Guardian Kevin Shields suggests that Britpop might have been a government conspiracy. His belief primarily comes from the fact that Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn were major Labour party supporters and often visited the government headquarters at 10 Downing. “Someday it would be interesting to read all the MI5 files on Britpop. The wool was pulled right over everyone’s eyes there,” says Shields in the interview, which will be released in full later today. It almost makes you think, with all of the support Arcade Fire and the National have given to the Obama administration… maybe indie rock is a conspiracy too. Time to start dissecting “Reflektor” for possible clues.

  1. no, no it wasn’t.

  2. Imagine if America’s conspiracy theories always resulted in such great results.

  3. El narcocorrido es una conspiración del gobierno.

  4. Not surprised, since pretty much all British music trends are engineered by the government. Parliament engineered the Madchester Scene simply as a way to buoy the region’s tie dye t-shit industry.

  5. What I love about Kevin’s various off-beat conspiracy theories is that as wacky as some of them are, they almost all have a hint of truth and possibility in there. I don’t think Damon and Noel were in cahoots with any sort of government agenda…but I can’t help but think government doesn’t take some advantage of something that influential in their own way.

He always makes you think, at least.

  6. he’s already procrastinating on the follow up to m v b?

  8. What the fuck does he mean, “the wool was pulled right over everyone’s eyes”? Sure Kevin, so all that great music Blur recorded and released was actually shit, and all of us simpletons (you know, music listeners) were so easily fooled into believing we liked it. Shit, I feel like such a fool for being so easily duped.

He’s a crackpot if he actually believes this, but I don’t think he does. Gotta make the blogs somehow. Anyway, it’s pretty big talk for a guy who practically slept through the past two decades of music.

  9. Reflektor DOES mention PRISM.

  10. Arcade Fire are total shite and Oasis are the poor man’s Beatles.
