Shut Up, Dude

Another big week for Kanye West. Of course we all watched Yeezy on Kimmel, where the rap genius/biggest rock star in the world got to prove he has a sense of humor while schooling Americans on François Pinault. Kanye’s also riding high on Billboard’s Top 20 thanks to a viral video that was soundtracked by “Gone.” And it turns out he won’t have to do time for roughing up that paparazzo at LAX over the summer. Maybe that’s why Kanye was in such a good mood at the gas station today. How was your week?

You know if you haven’t heard The Dreaming you can just say. Nobody will think less of you. Well nobody will think less of you than they do right now.

Man…people are kind of dicks about women’s bodies.

It’s not like this is a particularly erotic photograph. Doesn’t it seem strange that a woman can’t display her naked torso without the image being decried as pornography? Doesn’t that embody the unhealthy degree to which we fetishize and claim public ownership over women’s bodies? It’s creepy and patronizing to construe a woman’s decision to present her body as intrinsically exploitative, as though clothing is the only means by which women can maintain agency over their art.

Also, saying “she’s just desperate for attention” ignores the fact that ALL artists are desperate for attention. A desperate need to be validated by others is sort of the default prerequisite for dedicating your life to a creative pursuit. People who are “well adjusted” and satisfied by the love and respect of close friends and family aren’t typically inclined to throw themselves naked and raw to a cruel, disinterested public, to present the bloodiest, most wounded slabs of their person up for consumption.

Can we all maybe keep perspective? People keep saying Kanye needs to act more like a classic rock star. But those classic rock stars don’t exactly have a stellar track record.

Kanye isn’t a known abuser of women. John Lennon was.
Kanye wasn’t arrested for possessing Nazi paraphernalia. David Bowie was.
Kanye isn’t a heroin addict. Kurt Cobain was.
Kanye doesn’t touch children. Michael Jackson did.
Kanye’s manager didn’t hire a violent street gang for concert security. The Rolling Stones did.

By comparison the worst thing Kanye ever did was hurt Taylor Swift’s feelings.

Well actually the worst thing Kanye did was praise David Stern, that human slimeball. Actually you know what? Fuck Kanye. David Stern is the worst.

I was at the show last night. As others have noted, it was a woman who yelled out the offending comment. Still, I think it IS somewhat a gender issue, not because of the gender of the person who yelled it, but because if the PERFORMER had been male, I doubt anyone would think to question his appearance in that way. People seem to be way more focused on appearance and body weight when the performer is female. Nothing about Fiona’s appearance that was detracting from her ability to do her JOB, which is singing and performing. As Fiona herself said after the “you were beautiful 20 years ago” comment, “Why the fuck is it my job to be ‘beautiful’ anyway?” Exactly.

Sexism aside, I think the “concerned” heckler was way out of line. It doesn’t matter if she was right or not about Fiona’s health. In no way is it appropriate or constructive to yell out “advice” of a very personal nature in a public forum. Just wrong on every level.

Funniest part was when Kimmel asked Kanye where he was when he was sending those tweets:

“I like to think that you were on the toiilet.” ~Kimmel

“Yeah that’s when I think of my best shit.” ~Kanye

THIS WEEK’S 5 LOWEST RATED COMMENTS

#5 adam antine | Oct 4th Score:-10

Hopefully she’ll be frightened away forever. She obviously can’t handle it anymore (being in the spotlight; receiving criticism; dealing with her career). She should find some other way to make money and just be done with it. It’s obviously not worth it any longer. The level of ego/pride she’s dealing with is very unhealthy, and it’s likely only going to lead to something irreversibly awful when the bubble final bursts. There is life beyond the spotlight/attention.

How could you think that being on heroin or hiring the Angels is somehow at odds with rock and roll? Um, hello? Nazi gear…whatever. They had great color schemes. Whatever gets your artistic muse going. As long as you don’t have Nazi sympathies (my grandparents were German Jews who narrowly escaped in 1939.) Sharing a bed with consenting kids in a platonic way (nothing was ever proven)? Weird as hell, but MJ gave his childhood to rock and roll, so I don’t begrudge him that.

OTOH, fashion designer? Spending thousands of hours thinking about fabric or trends or whatever? That’s some seriously whack shit.

And I obviously never said that some late-period Stones is better than Kanye.

Yeah but all those people made music that was far greater than Kanye’s.

And being a fashion designer is far more embarrassing than possessing Nazi paraphernalia, being a heroin addict, sharing a bed with kids, or hiring the Hells Angels.

  1. Does Stereogum have any big plans for CMJ next week?

    • Not really! We’ll be attending various showcases, though. Any recommendations?

      • Oh wow! Put on the spot…

I’m sort of winging it. It’s my first time to go to CMJ and I’m flying halfway across the country for a week of concert overload.

I’m definitely going to see Spiritualized tomorrow at the Mexican Summer anniversary show (Thanks again for the heads up Chris!!) because DUUUUUHHHHHHHHH

I’m going to Barclays on Monday to see NIN & gy!be because I still like the music I listened to 10+ years ago…

I got tickets to Fuck Buttons at le poisson rouge on Friday… (because I loooooove loooong songs)

But as far as showcases it’ll be a day to day thing. I’m going to try and catch Weekend sometime on Wednesday… either at Cake Shop in the afternoon or Judson Memorial Church in the early afternoon (which seems like it would be amazing, especially given the contrast of the vinyl album cover of “jinx” [WHICH IS STILL SUCH A GREAT ALBUM!] but only if I get in)

I guess Savages got rescheduled to Wednesday night from a previous date… if it doesn’t sell out I may consider popping over to Terminal 5 for that show.

Other than that I’m really just going with the flow. Keeping a loose schedule so I can go anywhere and perhaps be surprised by a band I’ve never heard. I think that’s what it’s all about anyway.

I was really hoping there would be a Stereogum party to meet the writers and hell even some commenters in real life. Perhaps we can all pick a showcase as a family and meet up for high fives and overpriced drinks?

      • check out Pool Cosby!

  2. “Sharing a bed with consenting kids in a platonic way (nothing was ever proven)? Weird as hell, but MJ gave his childhood to rock and roll, so I don’t begrudge him that.”

This is on my shortlist of the worst things I’ve ever fucking heard.

  3. Late to the party on that Fiona heckler article and CTRL F’d big daddy himself Joshua Sanders to see if he made an appearance. Unfortunately he did not but he got a nice shout out from commenter Dick Litman so, you know, Dick Litman rad comment.

  4. The #9 best comment was awesome. Well done.

  5. Neutral Milk Hotel tomorrow! I AM THE KING OF CARROT FLOWERS

  6. So have you listened to The Dreaming yet?

  7. I’m going to scream the sentiments of Luke Worle last week and say the downvote system should be eradicated. Because this is high school, I can write well thought out comments and then be downvoted by people who just don’t like seeing my name, and it’s dumb. -5 votes for saying “Hell hath no fury like a hoodie-less black metal fan scorned.”? I’m pretty sure Michael Nelson even thumbs upped that comment because it was a joke.

More like “Shut It Down, Dude.”

    • Some people quite hate me (or my comments) because I think Kanye West is a pompous hack. He obviously has a measure of talent, to be fair, but its silly to try and express an opinion and be downvoted to death (this is the only music message board forum where downvoting has ever come into the equation ). As long as opinions are not abusive or name calling ( like this week’s nazi defending justifiably worst comment of the week) then sheesh. I mean, Kanye West is a lightning rod of love him or hate him. I’m not out of step to hate his ego and his preposterous self anointed claims of being the greatest musician on earth. This train wreck of his ego on full parade shouldn’t be celebrated. It’s sad. And I have the right to say that without being cursed at…right?
Anyway I think the Stereogum posting setup is fantastic but certainly think the downvoting system hampers the mood. I’m not going to bitch anymore about downvoting/upvoting and whatever because hey, who cares. We’re all here for the music. Some of us can learn something from each other’s taste and despite my ill feelings about Kanye’s antics, perhaps I shouldn’t be as judgmental to him.

      • Even though I didn’t agree with your differing opinion on ‘Ye, I didn’t begrudge / downvote you since you put it in a thoughtful way.

I go through my cycles here. Sometimes it feels like readers have gotten “over” their cattiness and I can comment with ease, but lately, it’s been more like a pack of the same people making it impossible to enjoy the community since they’re always the ones evolving my posts into a trail of replies where their personal vendettas are exposed and I’m accused of mongering for upvotes or they just tell me they hate me, and then from there on out, every comment I make even if it’s as inane as “I love this Arcade Fire song!” sees a -4 next to it.

Right now, I don’t see any value to contributing to this community so I’ll take my obligatory sabbatical.

        • I enjoy your blog Michael_ and think you have a gift for writing. There’s some cool people on the board that I like that keep me on here because most of us think alike in terms of music and music appreciation. Who knows…maybe I’ll give Kanye’s tunes a fair shake.

  8. BTW Stereogum mods and Scott, I was honestly incredibly offended by Miguelito1′s insane and racist comments. That dude/it/whatever should be banned.

    • Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

      • Right. You obviously know you went waaaaaay over the edge of good judgment to get a rise.Your comments were wacked out, deviously trolling and done in the poorest of taste. Certain things are just…wow. I’ll sit this one out. You deserve your worst comment of the week.

        • Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see

    • Luke, we’ve been over this. They don’t ban people, and on the rarest of occasions when they do, it lasts a month and then the person makes it very obvious s/he has returned under a different screen name. They don’t care about people’s feelings, right or wrong.

      • It’s possible. Scott is cool though. BTW, I feel incredibly foolish taking up the bottom half of the week’s best and worst comments with my own comments might I add :/

  9. Since my name is on my Kanye comments, I just wanted to add I’m a bit embarrassed at how hard I was on the guy. For what its worth, I’m passionate about what i like and what i don’t, but…I went a bit overboard and I wasn’t as kind or as impartial as I should have been. Peace.

  10. wow i need to go to the kanye comment section to give more thumbs down to this miguelito1 guy

  11. Finally, some recognition. BTW, I’m right and ya’ll all a bunch of selfish muh fuhs if you wanna see that poor woman keep torturing herself just for your entertainment. #Fiona Snapple
