Last night, in remembrance of the 10 year anniversary of Elliott Smith’s death, several musicians gathered at Glasslands in Brooklyn to celebrate his songs. An Elliott Smith Tribute Show performers included Cat Power, Sky Ferreira, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Aaron Pfenning (ex-Chairlift), Marissa Nadler, Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV), and others.   1. Should you be playing an Elliott Smith tribute if you need to hold a lyrics sheet while you do it?

        • I don’t see the relevance of her age when Elliott passed away. I didn’t discover/get into Elliott Smith until two years after he died, despite being well within the “proper age range”.

          That being said, even my favorite songs of his I often can’t sing without help or messing them up. In the third video, Cat Power is checking the lyric sheet, too.

          It doesn’t *look* good.

          I agree with everything else you said, though.

  4. i love elliott to death (wink!) but forget not knowing the words, she was just singing these perfect songs so so poorly.
